I have tried numerous times to install Windows Live Messenger on my XP computer. It gets all the way to 100% and then starts rolling back everything. I've tried uninstalling all the Windows Live stuff I can find, and I've checked the firewall and disk space and administrative permission, but nothing seems to work.

I do have Windows Messenger on the system, but it only shows up sporadically.

Can someone please help? Thank you.

OK, I've entered my system details. I also tried Evan Ono's suggestion and followed instructions on Can't Install Windows Live Messenger and it STILL rolls back when it gets to 100%. Any more thoughts, please?
    Thank you.

Have you tried shutting down all backround programs that are running in the system tray and then seeing if Windows Live Messenger will install?

Since Windows XP already includes a very old version of Windows Messenger I would remove that version first and then try installing Windows Live Messenger and see if it installs.

To remove the default version of Windows Messenger from Windows XP follow these steps:

    1. Click on Start< Control Panel
    2. Click on Add or Remove Programs
    3. Select Add/Remove Windows Components
    4. Uncheck the Windows Messenger checkbox
    5. Click Next
    6. When the wizard finishes, click Finish
    7. Restart your computer
    8. Open My Computer and navigate to C:/Program Files. Find the Windows Messenger folder and delete it.

Now see if Windows Live Messenger will install.

Boy, I wish I had your problem. I've been trying to get rid of the stupid thing but my ISP's browser requires it to be running.

The various "Messenger" programs all seem to fighting each other and I can't figure out which is which.

Now I've dropped MSN in favor of Comcast, maybe I can get the stupid thing deleted. Early days yet!

Still no luck! The article "Can't Install Windows Live Messenger" said something about taking ownership of a file, C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\IdentityCRL. I don't have that particular directory; however, I did find C:\Documents and Settings\Lynda K\Application Data\Microsoft\IdentityCRL. Is this the same thing? How do I "take ownership." Again, the above article recommended Ultimate Windows Tweaker, but that appears to be for Vista. What do I do next?
    Thanks
    Lynda K

    Read this, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308421

Then take ownership of the C:\Documents and Settings\Lynda K\Application Data\Microsoft\IdentityCRL folder. Now see if Windows Live Messenger will install.

This is making me crazy! Should I try deleting all the Windows XP updates and start from scratch?
