If you have an actual XP install CD a repair install is normally ok but it's still best to backup data and have software installation media handy if there's a problem.

    To do a repair install...

    1. Set your BIOS to BOOT from CD-ROM.
    2. Insert The Windows XP CD into your CD Drive and reboot/power on.
    3. The screen will prompt a message saying "Press any key to boot from DVD/CD ". or similar.
    4. Press ENTER to continue.
    5. After the BLUE (loading) screen you'll have 3 OPTIONS, press Enter = Continue, R = Repair or F3 = Quit. Press ENTER.
    6. Now Press F8 to accept the agreement.
    7. You should now be presented with any previous version of Windows available on the PC.
    8. press R to repair.

If the above doesn't work please let us know.

xp professional does not load like that giving the option as you have outlined here. The choices are only in setting up the hard drive, as in formatting this partion etc.

Sounds like there's a problem with your Hard drive (is it a SATA drive)?

Please enter your system specifications, particularly HD make and model and which service pack CD you're using.

If this is your main system it would be helpful if you add your system details to your profile. Please click on the link and follow those instructions it could save some time when resolving this or further issues.

A common error is to forget to show your system details in your profile

If you do add your system specifications be sure to do the above :)

Even if you don't wish to add your specs to your profile, please include them in your next post.
