I've got one that is driving me nuts.... I'm running W7 Ultimate with all patches. My system is a Del Dimension E520 w/4GB. The sound card is a Sigma Tel High Definition.Recently, I don't know when, I lost my startup and system sounds. I've also lost sound when IE plays a video. An example would be Tech Republic R Dojo's pages.

It gets a bit wierd, though, because I can "play" all the sounds (*.WAV), movies (MPG & WMV) as well as the sounds that are supposed to be used as system sounds. If I open the mixer and select the "Speakers" icon, I can "test" a sound. If I select the "System Sounds icon, no sounds. I should note that if I then "search" for sounds, I get a list of the sound files (WAV) and I can "play" them.

Also, if I launch a game like "Left 4 Dead 2 ". the opening "movies" play with no sound. However, once teh game starts, sounds are back.

I've uninstalled, installed the drivers several times with no luck. I did note, though, that i have 2 "Sound" icons in the Control Panel. They both do the same thing and neither works.

Any ideas would be much appreciated....

    This can be normal
    1. is for Windows audio
1 is for you installed sound (Sigmatel)

Please confirm you have the latest drivers from here: http://support.dell.com/support/dow...IM_PNT_P4_E520&hidos=WW1&hidlang=en&TabIndex=
Note: The Vista drivers will work with Windows 7
But I do not know which 32bit or 64 bit you have?

You can confirm all your hardware information from here: http://support.dell.com/support/top...s?~ck=ln&~tab=2&c=us&cs=555&l=en&lnki=0&s=biz
Once done you may want to update your specs in your profile, Info HERE

I see you have updated from a Dell Optiplex GX-280, at least you like Dell
Dell is ideal for support, and carry many resources and articles.
If this is a new system under warranty, have you contacted them yet?

Thanks for the quick TAT. The system is out of warrantee. I'm running W7 RTM Ultimate 32-bit.

I downloaded and installed the drivers once again... no luck. The Dell site says my current configuration is "High Definition Audio Device ".

Both "Sound" icons open the same window.

I see your sound driver is here: ftp://ftp.us.dell.com/audio/R157052.EXE

Since that has been doubly confirmed now :D Then it must be a resource conflict or possibly a setting stopping it somewhere.

One way to show your computer settings is to provide a HijackThis log
HijackThis can be downloaded from HERE
Please download and run, and do a system scan and save a logfile
Copy and paste the entire log to a new reply

I've just had a quick look as I've been on for a while now so I will have to come back later on.

But I notice that some of your Apps (including Kaspersky) has been installed on D drive, so I wonder if this is causing any conflict with things such as Audio drivers

There are some minor issues that should not cause further driver issues, but please do the following (as I take a rest)
    IE Reset: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923737
    Malwarebytes updated Quick scan: http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam-download.php

I will be back later to see the results, and continue viewing the log

Reset IE. No change. MalewareBytes (my favorite, by the way) shows nothing. I've had Kaspersky installed on the D: drive (along with all my programs) since I first installed W7 (right after they released the RTM code). This problem probably cropped up in the past week (maybe 2)...

    Hi rasilon

Can you please remove all logs from this thread

I have had a few conversations with Admin here, and posting of logs will close the thread, as only Malware removal forum can have these logs attached

I suspect you don't have long to edit and save your posts.
    Good -luck

I'll reply once they are removed

    Thanks

There was one startup entry in particular
Startup: SAVE THE DATE - QVC Beauty Bash in Blogs in QVC Community.url

This starts with your computer? Is that right?

Here is the Microsoft Automated Troubleshooting Services for "No Sound in Windows" http://support.microsoft.com/gp/no_sound

It works on Vista, not sure on Windows 7 (but it should)
It doesn't just check for "No Sounds" it checks a whole range of areas.

Please also give that a go

    Sorry about the log files.

The Startup item was just a web page that I wanted displayed every time I booted to remind me. It's gone and still no fix.

In the mixer, no muting. Anywhere else I should look? Remember, I hear sounds when playing any WAV, MPEG or WMV file.

The "Fix-It" won't work on W7 (or Server 2008). I followed the "troubleshooting problem suggestions. It couldn't find any problems...

Well we've tried a few things, and still no go.

You could try uninstalling all your sound driver/programs fully
Or checking every single sound program setting, even speaker setup
    Or try Repairing Windows
Or even have a go at checking for malware issues in the Malware and Virus removal forum

Maybe its not fully compatible with Windows 7, anyway your support page doesn't even show any Windows 7 drivers.
You could contact Dell and confirm

Thanks for the effort. I've unistalled the sound driver and programs several times. I've checked the sound settings several times, also. I guess a Repair is in order and maybe a Restore...

Dell definitely doesn't have any W7 drivers for the E520. I'll post back if I have any success.... Thanks...

On playing some DVDs Movies, at start there is no sound with titles. I have been caught out, thinking my sound card was at fault.

Righjt. The problem with "startup" movies I mentioned was specifically for a game called "Left 4 Dead 2 ". When you start it there are three movies/cutouts shown. Before this problem cropped up, they played just fine with sound. Now, no sound.

In your windows sound applet, do you have speakers set as the default playback device?

Yes. I've tried everything, even booting windows in diagnostic mode with no luck. I was going to try a W7 repair this weekend, but we lost power for 3 days, so it will have to wait fro next weekend...

    Thanks for the reply.

Yeah, as I mentioned in the beginning, I get sounds when I play an MPEG file or a video game.

Can you try adding one of the free codec packages and retest?
