I've started to get a virus alert when I attempt to access updates from the MS update page. The CA Anti-virus alert says that wuweb.dll is infected.

To make the error happen I click on "windows update" from the IE8 tools menu. I'm then prompted to install a file named "Windows Update." When I click on install I get the virus warning from CA.

To resolve the problem I googled wuweb.dll and found a recommendation from MS to unregister wuweb.dll and stop the background interface and then re-register wuweb.dll and start the background interface. NO JOY. I then ran SFS /Scannow but still get the error after that completed.

I have recently installed some updates from MS and the problem started after that but I don't know how to tell which updates those were to research any problems others may have had with updates.

So that's my story and I'm stick'n with it! Anyone have any suggestions to get me moving in the update world again?

Hi Jim. Your system could still be infected with malware which is preventing you from accessing the Windows Update wesite. I would make sure that your computer is clean of malware before we deal with the Windows Update issue.

Having said that please read this and post a new thread in the Malware and Virus Removal Forum.

Just this morning I found, HERE, information indicating the error is a "False Possitive" generated by the antivirus program. A fix is in the works by CA.

They also posted a workaround that reads:
Thank you Evan for your input/help.

Oh ok. Well if its a false positive then I wouldn't worry about it. Are you still having any issues with accessing Windows Update?

No problems when I use the "work around." I've successfully downloaded all outstanding updates. :D
