Let's try Dial-a-fix first it can often resolve issues like this...

Download Dial-a-fix and extract the zip archive to your desktop. Start Dial-a-fix and tick the Fix Windows Installer box Click go and wait a few minutes for it to do it's stuff.

Close Dial-a-fix and restart computer, let us know how things go.

    NOTE

Dial-a-fix is not yet compatible with IE8 (see here), if you have IE8 installed OK your way past the initial error.

    OK,

Try dial a fix again this time with all the fixes on the main page

Let's try Dial-a-fix first it can often resolve issues like this...

Download Dial-a-fix and extract the zip archive to your desktop. Start Dial-a-fix and click on the Check All button (Green Ticks) next to the go button at the bottom of the window. Click go and wait a few minutes for it to do it's stuff.

Close Dial-a-fix and restart, let us know how things go.

    NOTE

Dial-a-fix is not yet compatible with IE8, if you have IE8 installed OK your way past the initial error and any errors that occur during the Explorer/IE/OE/shell/WMP registrations.

    (see here)
If that doesn't work the try the latest version of windows installer you want to download WindowsXP-KB942288-v3-x86.exe

Let us know how things go.

Hi gener1. Try installing Windows Installer 4.5 and see if the issue is resolved.

Edit: Looks like Wildfire beat me to it. :D

I followed the above directions in order

downloaded the program Dial a fix. Had to use the first option. I checkmarked windows installer-------- then I tried the the windows installer service on the right side of the program------- then used the program using the green checkmark next to the go and 'let it do its thing' ---------- then I tryed h& R block. I followed your directions in the order you gave me except I added the delete the windows installer service and installed the windows installer 4.5. Any more questions Ill be glad to answer them. I think I covered everything. Gene

    Thanks Gene.

And again, you are trying to install H&R block from?

Is it a CD, File on your HD, File on your network, installing straight from the internet?

While we're troubleshooting this, if this is your main system it would be helpful if you add your system details to your profile. Please click on the link and follow those instructions it could save some time when resolving this or further issues.

A common error is to forget to show your system details in your profile

If you do add your system specifications be sure to do the above :)

    Looks good,

Try and boot from it, if you are able to boot then try a repair install.

    Backup any important data first.

    To do a repair install...

    1. Set your BIOS to BOOT from CD-ROM.
    2. Insert The Windows XP CD into your CD Drive and reboot/power on.
    3. The screen will prompt a message saying "Press any key to boot from DVD/CD ". or similar.
    4. Press ENTER to continue.
    5. After the BLUE (loading) screen you'll have 3 OPTIONS, press Enter = Continue, R = Repair or F3 = Quit. Press ENTER.
    6. Now Press F8 to accept the agreement.
    7. You should now be presented with any previous version of Windows available on the PC.
    8. press R to repair.

If the above doesn't work please let us know.
