My XP desktop computer stopped working a while ago. It keeps restarting, I took the automatic restart off and I saw the blue screen (0x24). I know you all probably are familiar with that.

I've tried to run chkdsk, chkdsk /r, chkdsk /f
They all don't work. It says on the next restart it will check, but it never does.

I even tried to check the disk by right clicking on my disk, going to properties, tools and check now. It said it would start on the next restart. It never did.

    Please help me.

Oh and I tried F8 and tried everything from safe mode to last known good config. nothing works!!! (It continues to restart)

And, I can only go on safe mode if I choose safe mode if I press ESC when it says to. Sometimes it doesn't work and I have to keep pressing enter. Sometimes it really doesn't work...I don't know what to do!

umm, I added my system information, but some of it, I don't know how to get.
The last one, 32 or 64, I am not certain, I tried to find the information, but I couldn't. The link given on the help page does not work on my computer, it says the software is too old to use.

I've already tried microsoft's help tutorial. It didn't work. I already said that in the beginning.

Please help me, I need a step by step tutorial, I don't really understand computers :3

Your OS will be 32 bit as you are running XP Home.

You should check your hard drive as I suggested, but first we need to know the make of the drive and will post instructions .....

As the computer will not run the only option you have is to open the case and look at the hard drive for a Manufacturer's name and model no.

Your computer is not working because there is a problem with the NTFS file system .....
As chkdsk fails to run the suspicion falls on the state of the hard drive so the first step is to check that out with the drive manufacturer's disk diagnostic software.

You need to know the make/model no. of the hard drive to be able to download the software specific to your make of drive.

Please download and run SIW and go to Hardware > Storage Devices where the make of your hard drive should be given.

Once you know the make of the drive post the details here and if you need help in locating the right download please ask :)

Download seatools for dos from here and run a long test on the drive. Do Not perfom a zero fill or you will lose data.

A tutorial for Seatools is available here

Please post back with your findings.

the seatools will not work on my computer (i'm using safe mode)
It says: MSI launch conditions failed. Installation Aborted.

And I can't use a CD because for some reason the CD's aren't read...

I have tried system restore, nothing works...

    My apologies,

I assumed you were posting about your gateway.

Can you post make and model of the laptop please?

    EDIT:

Ignore that, you are posting about the Gateway  (it's a little confusing here too).

Can you access a friends/library/internet cafe system to make the floppy?

    Edited my post during yours...

Optical Drives and Floppy drives are totally different...

It may be a case of you having to set the boot order in the BIOS but before we do I'd like to ensure you have some form of boot media...

Either SeaTools for DOS CD or Floppy version will do.

I tried putting a floppy in my computer and it doesn't read it, I don't think it will boot with a floppy.
and booting with a cd doesn't work either.

    Is there any other way...?

    OK tashy,

You're describing a few unrelated errors here which although possible isn't very likely. It is more likely that you haven't set the boot priority in your BIOS settings to Floppy then CD then finally HD.

Unfortunately since BIOS Setups vary between system to system it would be very difficult to give you step by step instructions. Can you ask someone with more computer experience to assist?

Well without a working CD Drive or floppy the only other solution I can think of is to install the drive as a slave in another system and test it in there.
