Open Office seems to do everything the expensive packages do. Word processor, spread sheets, etc.

Since many don't use Open Office yet, here's a tip on creating MS Office files to avoid formatting problems:

Instead of creating a new document, find or download an Ms Office file (Word or Excel*), open and delete the contents, now create your document and save in current format. Et voila! you just created an Ms Office document for free.

    * These are the two that I have used.

Good process I never thought of using. What I usually do is create a document in Open Office, save it, and then "Save as" and save it in either Word or Excel format if I expect I will be providing to a recipient that will need it in the Microsoft Office format. Can't do that with Access though.

Perhaps not everyone experience format defects with this last method...

If don't want the full office suite and just need a word processor then Abiword is a good choice. (open source, free)

Open Office also gives you the choice to only install Writer...

After reading this post, I decided to download Open Office - not very friendly!
It makes no mention, that is until selecting Data Base, that Java is required to use this software.
I am certainly disappointed with this software and in the past using Java proved a multitude of disasters.

Well Bobby, I don't know what you are used to, but I have been using OOo for a long time and I think it's great and easy to use software, if not the best. I admit it takes a little adjusting from MS, but it's not all that different. Make sure you get it from OpenOffice.org where you will find a lot of good info and forums.

As for Java I don't recall having any problems other than having to install one of the updates manually.

JCinvan, I have downloaded two versions:
OOo_3.1.1_Win32 and OOo_3.2.0_Win32, which of the two, would you recommend? My OS is Windows 7 64bit Home edition.
Java has several files, can you please suggest which to download from Sun Systems web site.
    Thank you.

I'm still running 3.0.1, but I will be updating shortly. Since 3.2 is a release candidate version for testing, you most likely be better starting with 3.1.1. Java Runtime Environment is included in the package. If you still need to download more files, get the latest stable version.

FYI, you don't need java to install and use openoffice. You can download installation packages without java included in it. Some openoffice functionality does require java, but these functions are not needed in average word processor usage.

Do a custom install and deselect the stuff you'll never need or use.

I used Windows XP and Works 6 for Data Base use. However, I changed my computer and now use Windows 7.
In comparison, Works 6 was easy to enter required information, but find Ooo.3.1.1 is out of my depth.
I agree we can not all be experts and certainly I do not profess to be one.
My thanks to all who have contributed to this post.
