Msconfig can start but won't show up?

Hi everybody.

I just installed a fresh XP Pro installation three days ago and have installed some sofware (including anti-virus). The problem is when I try to run msconfig (either through Win+run or via explorer or cmd), I can see it's process name on task manager but the window won't show up. It just isn't showing.

I also validated this using a tool called cmdow, that lists all currently running window handles and msconfig does not appear on the list!

I tried sfc /scannow, but it didn't change anything.

What could be the problem? I am a very experienced user and have never encountered such an issue.

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Have you ran your virus and sypware programs ?

Sometimes a virus makes it unaccessable.

If the virus and spyware scan comes up clean - you may want to check this site:

I know it shows that the msconfig can not run but it will also tell you how to get a new copy of msconfig from your install disk and how to check that it is in the right directory.

 

Hi, thank you for the fast reply and sorry for the late reply - my modem has died last week and it took me some time to replace it.

Unfortunately I wasn't able to solve my problem either. I performed a virus scan and my PC is clean. I tried using your link but the methods he provides does not work - first of all there is no such command as "expand ". At least, my CMD is reluctant to use it

If you could shed some light on this, please! I would like to save installing windows again.

Look man, I don't know what's going on, but the website will not let me download the file - it closes the connection. I tried searching Google already for this but I didn't find any source to download it from. Can you PLEASE send this file to me via e-mail?
