Hello, are there any free registry cleaners out there. I am coming here because I don't want to download a virus as I have just spent 4 days removing one.

Why is this thread in the Windows 7 forum when your System Specs show you to be running Vista. If you have upgraded to 7 please amend your Specs. Moved to Other Software forum.

There are plenty of registry cleaners available - freeware and otherwise, but you would be well advised to use none of them. They rarely do any good and are quite capable of rendering your computer unbootable. You will see no increase in performance as a result of cleaning the registry.

They should only be used in very specific circumstances by experienced users.
In which case you would be well advised to ......

Read this as indicated at the head of the Malware & Virus Removal forum and post the logs requested in a new thread in that forum. You cannot be certain that you have removed all traces of any virus/malware without an expert analysis of your system.

I appreciate the offer to remove the virus, however I removed it using these forums. I also do not think that the virus on my laptop is related to the registry cleaner inquiry about a separate laptop, which has already been established.

    Fine.
Your initial post made no suggestion that two laptops were involved - my last post was being composed while you posted the explanation - they crossed.

    Ny advice remains unchanged ....
However if that is the path you intend to follow I suggest you use the uncrippled 30 day trial of jv16PowerTools and be sure to backup any changes/deletions. You will be prompted to do so.

Let's put it this way: If you will use a Registry Cleaner you'll be back posting in a few days about all kind of things no longer working. STAY AWAY!

Experienced users may try using a Registry Cleaner, but it is definitely not for a beginner.

A .big extension seems to be an Electronic Arts registered extension.

    By who?

But, that doesn't negate the fact that my computer still will not run this program. It shouldn't matter "who/what" told me. What case did you rest?

Possible the file has been corrupted? or the game executable?
If this is a file such as from a Playstation game, perhaps you may need a gamers forum?

It is a PC game. It has been reinstalled multiple times, with the same error. EA tells me to fix/clean my registry.

I have had similar problems with EA games (The Sims). Based on what I have experienced, EA provides specific registry keys that need to be removed or altered. This has to be done manually, not using any registry cleaner. I would recommend either contacting EA Tech support directly or going to their support site for exact instructions on what needs to be done to correct the issue with their game.

REMINDER - Do not make any changes to your registry without backing it up first! And, if you aren't familiar with editing the registry, seek the assistance of someone who is.

I am rather confused in that the original Posting has changed from registry cleaners to games!!!
Going back to the original posting ---- tampering with the registry manually or by use of software, has always been leave registry information well alone unless you are fully conversant with the registry workings.
A wrong registry delete at best warants a new installation of the computer or worse a new drive.
I find a software called Revo Uninstaller, is an ideal performer in removing all traces of software from the registry without any mishaps.
Most registry troubles are cause with software not being completely removed from the system, causing trouble to other software installed.
Perhaps members of this forum will disagree with content of this posting.

If you read through the thread you will note that the reason for original request for advice regarding registry cleaners was a problem with a game, the authors of which instructed the OP to clean the registry. See Post #14.

I would follow Compdude's #15 post and contact EA for the correct procedure as I had a problem with TW 2005. EA provided all the help which I followed to the letter, and all was sweet. NO registry cleaners were involved or suggested. I would definitely agree with Pete and Arie. Cheers Neil.:D
