I was updating my laptop with the HP Update installer and I got the error message that HP couldn't read the file and to "Consult Windows Installer Help (Msi.chm) or MSDN ". Any suggestions? It was trying to install the HP Active Support Library.msi during this error.

Try downloading the file direct from HP and saving to your hard drive before installing.

Where would I save it to exactly? I'm running Vista Home Premium. Also where can I obtain this file. I went to HP with no luck.

My Documents - make a new folder and download it to that.
Please post the model no of your HP laptop and I will look for you.

I went to the Google site you gave and the first thing I saw was exactly what is happening with me. It reads

"When i tried to install the update it shows the error message and rolling back action become started. the error message is- "Error 1316. A network error occured while attempting to read from the file c:\Windows\Installer\HP Active Support Libarary.msi" and after the rolling back action starts again an error message appears on the screen- "Error:- 1603 Fatal error during installation. consult windows installer help (Msi.chm) or MSDN for more information. "

I'm downloading now. This seems to be a permissions error with Vista. It's weird. I hope the download helps.

Try installing as Administrator - right click the .exe file > Run as Administrator. I guess that's the route in Vista, never used it, but that is the method in 7.

That didn't work either. How important is this file?

HP Active Support Library - see Description.

Personally I would not worry about it - any necessary troubleshooting can be sorted here :)

FWIW I formatted my HP laptop some time ago to install 7 and in doing so got rid of all the HP stuff (including the recovery and tools partitions) which is not necessary for day to day operation.

Ok. thank you. Is it really worth upgrading to Windows 7? I want to but I've read some of the horror stories about troubles upgrading. My desktop is a Gateway and is running Vista 64 bit. It has the AMD Phenom Quad Core Processor with 4 Gigs Ram.

Run Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor although if you are running Vista x64 I doubt that any problems will be thrown up.
Personally I would never upgrade - a clean install is the way to go.

I migrated from XP Pro x32 to & Pro x64 initially in dual boot with XP which created a few known problems with System Restore on the 2 OS's, but soom dumped XP completely. Am well satisfied with 7 which I read is so much better than Vista on which I passed.

I've heard the same thing but I can't really see a difference. Personally I love Vista Home Premium. It has not given me one problem that I did not create on my own by downloading something that I shouldn't have. I did not like XP at all.
Thank you for all of your help. I'm SURE that I will be here again pleading for help. LOL
