I am working on a Dell Latitude D610 laptop ( Windows XP Pro) that will not startup. Either by using the docking station or the power cord. When I press the power button "nothing" happens. No lights nothing. I have taken the laptop apart and everything inside seemed fine. The funny thing is the first time I took it a apart and put everything back together the laptop startup into windows and then shut it's self down. Then back to no power. Press the power button...nothing...no lights. Anyone have any thoughts???

I remember helping a friend with a similar situation (it wasn't a Dell though)...

Her battery was FUBAR. Two suggestions

    1) Remove the battery and power supply then press the on switch for 30 seconds then insert battery and power and see if this works.

    2) Remove the battery and only use the power supply.

    Post back with results.

In the case of my friend the system would work from PSU but only if the battery was removed.

    IS the PSU working?

    Test it with a voltmeter.

I ditto this. Does the fan start? When you took it down, did you look to see if there were any suspicious looking capacitors, fuses, diodes on the mobo? Anything strange color, leaking, burned or skewed? Any strange odors?

Is the ram properly seated? Is the HDD healthy? Can you pull it and test it?

The hope-generating here is, the first time you took it apart and put it back together, it powered on, booted and loaded Windows. However briefly. Meaning the board was receiving power.

I admire your tenacity and patience!

Kinda sounds like some heat related issue.
Long shot thought: the cheap thermal paste Mfs use is just that, cheap and Less than..

While the lappys I have taken apart taught me it is often not easy to remove the heatsink.....if you can, clean it and the chip perfectly with alcohol and pristine hands, apply new thermal paste properly (I use straight razor edge) and put everything back together......I SAID it was a longshot though, right?

But after ruling other things, It really could allow a system to overheat and shut down.

PS: I just checked out this notebook. Very nice. And the board maxes out at 2GBs. I hope you hang in and troubleshoot and identify the issue. And post!

Unless it's been run into the ground, it's worth trying to put right. Just my opinion. That would obviously be the call of the owner and the owner's kind helper.

I would expect some sort of response, even if the CPU is overheating (maybe it's cooked :(). Can you feel any air coming out the air exhaust? I suppose if the main fan is broken, the system won't start up.

I agree about the power, check the voltage output on the charger and see if it will run without the battery connected (only with the charger/power pack).

Replacing parts for a laptop "costs a bomb ". Searching for a low-cost replacement parts is hard, but then you need to have identified the exact piece of hardware that is causing the problem...that would be easier when you swap identical parts (desktop computers can swap most parts).

You've opened it twice, well done. By your information about it "just" restarting, I wonder about a broken power connector or maybe that something else has a bad connection.

It all depends on how much time and effort you can afford to spend on it. Something is most probably broken, identifying whether it is a low-cost item rather than the opposite :( might take a lot of time (without considering having similar parts to try). Laptops, you are somewhat on your own.

So interesting, the above! Just wanna say, if you can idenfiy the issue and it's a part, & you get lucky. you can get some amazingly esoteric puter parts on ebay....if you key in the notebook model number.

If you do not see what you are looking for, you can also email the vendors to ask if they have what you want.

But only if, like Jilly, you like the challenge of fixing stuff.

I have a couple appointments to go to this morning but will get back to this problem this afternoon. I will first start with the voltage test and go from there. When taken apart the motherboard and other components looked fine. Reseated the ram. Tried running with no battery and just the AC power. No luck. Thanks for all your posts.

I got the laptop to boot up after the 30 second hold on the power button with no battery or ac power. Laptop boots up. Without the battery in. I have the keyboard off and noticed the fan turns on and off. Shouldn't the fan run continuous? Laptop seems to take a very long time to boot. Just desktop background no icons. It's been about 5 mins. and still booting.

OK. Had to leave so I turned the laptop off. Came back....I added memory because it only had 512mb, connected the power cord. No battery. Laptop booted fine. Did a virus scan and found a virus called "hijack.system.hidden ". Maybe this is what was causing it to hang at boot up. Anyway, laptop seems to be working fine. Ever since I pressed the power button for 30 seconds with no battery and power connected it has worked fine. I did put the battery back in and connect ac power. No problems. The 30 second trick did not work when I put the battery in and ac power. Only worked if I left the battery out connected the power cord and started the laptop. Works fine now with the battery in.

    Hi wyobison,

It's amazing how often that works ;) It actually resets the CMOS which may have been corrupted in some way.

Anyway regarding "hijack.hidden.system" where there's one baddie you'll usually find others. You may wish to read this and post requested logs in the Malware and virus removal board to get the system checked out.

Be aware that only Malware analysts will advise and they are extremly busy at the moment. Your post will be taken on a first come first served basis and it may take a few days before you receive a reply.

You won't believe this. I shut it down and now I am back to no start. Did the 30 second trick and nothing.

Power supply was fine. I think I got it figured out. Bad battery. No light comes on for battery charging. Bad battery must be halting system occasionally. I put a different battery in and battery light comes on.

    BRILLIANT!

Kudos for hangin in! I Googled and saw Wildfire's fabulous fix, and for this notebook exactly, several places online.
    Fascinating!

You saved two lives: that of the notebook and that of the lucky owner of the notebook.
    :)

    Congrats!!!!!:D
