Windows Vista [Toshiba laptop wont boot past the Toshiba screen]

My Toshiba laptop wont boot past the Toshiba screen, screen turns black with a white bar @ top left corner???

 

When I have come across that problem it is because the BIOS is having trouble finding the files to boot into the operating system.

Read in the laptop's manual about the BIOS/startup configuration settings. Find the setting to load "defaults ", Save and Exit. You can also see if there is information about the hard disk drive and if it seems to be detected correctly. Some systems have a HDD testing utility in the BIOS.

Try setting the defaults.

If you have any devices connected to the laptop, disconnect them. Maybe even check for any disks in the DVD drive.

 

Still no luck mattman, I can not even get to safemode.

I would take the hard disk drive out and put it back in again, just in case there is a bad connection.

I don't expect you will have a Windows DVD, but that's what I would try and check if it could see the hard disk/Vista drive. If you get that far, then try the Startup Repair option.

When you take the HDD out, write down it's make and model. It will probably be a Toshiba. Look up the laptop model and HDD at Toshiba (or go to the HDD manufacturer's website). Check Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs), knowledgebase information and look for HDD testing utilities (you can search for "flashing cursor" or "blinking cursor ").

I don't think I have had to go that far when I have come across that problem, just set the default values in the BIOS.
