Hi people, I was initially running an 80gb(maxtor) hdd on my computer for almost 3 years. A few days ago there was lots of power(mains) fluctuations and cuts. I wasnt using a ups. My hdd just wouldnt load windows. I even tried to reinstall n it wont so I guesed my hdd got blown.

I bought a 160gb sata hdd n did instal windows. I tried to connect both the IDE(80gb) and SATA(160gb) now it wont boot. I restarted and went to bios and set the sata hdd to be the 1st boot device. It still wont boot.

I restarted and chose the boot device (F8) it did finally boot. I managed to transfer stuff but at snail speed. Cant these two work together with the IDE HDD being a pure storage hub?

IDE and SATA drives will work perfectly well together. The fact you had a power outage and an apparent HD failure suggests that damage was done. not only to the HDD, but possibly to the motherboard as well.

I suspect a problem with the IDE drive - if you have only the SATA drive attached does the computer boot without problem?

You may need to install/update the chipset drivers for your motherboard, especially the SATA controller.

I suggest you check out the IDE drive with manufacturer's disk diagnostic software - DOS version from a bootable CD .....

Hi thanks.I take note of your advice on posting. When using the SATA hdd it boots though it has been initiating reboots frequently so I did reinstal windows severally thinking it was corrupted.

As I posted earlier the power outage may have damaged other components ....

I would look at your memory and test it ......

The only satisfactory way of testing RAM is to test the installed RAM in various configurations. If you have a single module swap it around the slots. If you have a pair of modules run each one singly, swapping between slots; then run them in pairs swapping between pairs of slots. If you have 2 sets of matched modules do not get them mixed up.
