Hi everyone, I wonder if you can help.
I do not know much about computers so you may need to know more like technical things etc.... I will do my best to answer but you will need to tell me how to find this info out.

This is my friends computer and it somehow picked up a virus. Another friend of his who is SUPPOSEDLY good at computers said he would sort out the problem. Anyway to cut a long story short, the laptop still turns on as normal and seems fine. But whenever you wish to go into something it will not let you.
If you click on any shortcuts, or items from the menu-it is like they do not exist anymore.
The only thing I can think is that he has actually deleted everything.
We do not have any of the original disks and when I took it into pc world I went weak at the knees when they told me the price to just diagnose the fault let alone fix it.
Any advice would be gratefully received, even if its just to tell us its not worth it and to throw it away.
    Thanks again.
    Graham.

Far too many 'experts' about :)

See if you can use System Restore to restore the computer to a date prior to the 'expert' fixiing it.

Then go the the Malware & Virus Removal forum ....

Please read this as indicated at the head of the forum and post the logs requested in a new thread.

Would be helpful to post the Make/Model of the computer in question.

    Reply to Pete.

    Hi Pete,

I can get into the command prompt fine, but then when I type in the command (%systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe) and then it enter.
Nothing happens except I think it wants me to enter a command as the screen does not change or anything:confused:
    Thanks again

Do you have access to an equivalent XP install CD? - you may be able to use it to make a Repair install of XP, using the COA number on the sticker on the computer.

    Hi Pete

Is there anyway I could buy 1 from somewhere. I have vista on my laptop.

Aside from this when I turn the computer on it asks for a password, my friend never had one so you just click ok and it just lets you in anyway.
I do not know if this is why I cannot run system restore??

Also when I try to go into windows media player, the reason I cannot get into it, is because the time/date is set at 21/jan/9999.
It will not let me change the date/time either.

This may have nothing to do with it, but just thought I would mention it lol.

You should pick up a genuine XP install CD on eBay ....

Have you tried to reset the time in the BIOS (Setup)?

I suspect that the computer is still infected, but if you are unable to run anything it is a difficult situation to rectify, apart from a clean install.

That is clearly how the computer is set up - for most purposes a blank password is OK.

I have no idea why you are unable to run System Restore from the prompt - it looks like your friend's 'expert' really fouled things up.

Are you able to get into simple Safe Mode and if so does the computer function normally? I rather doubt it, but need to clear up that point.

Out of interest try the command line ...

    C:\Windows\system32\restore\rstrui.exe
