1 1/2 year old Dell laptop XPS had never been defragged. Windows Vista defragger would not work, Verizon Security Suite defragger would not work. Error message said not enough available space to defrag. Downloaded free tool to defrag, now I get a blue screen dump and restart each time I enter password to launch desktop. As a photographer, most of hardware space is taken up by photos which I need to save, but cannot get to a point where I can copy to external hard drive.

Hi Leonard2, Welcome to Windowsbbs! :)

What happens when you press F8 on startup and select Last Known Good Configuration? Does the computer log in to your user account now? If it doesn't restart the computer, press F8 on startup again but this time select Safe Mode. Can you log into your user account in Safe Mode? BTW what program did you use to defragment your computer?

Also please enter your System Details. It helps us in answering your questions.

Sorry, but are you saying you don't have a current backup

Well, somehow I think you don't. Let this be a warning! We will have a chance of retrieving your files, first try the suggestions posted by Evan & post back with the results.

You can take the hard disk drive out of the computer and connect it to (into) another computer, preferably a Vista OS computer. You should be able to access the files that way.

Make a note of what Arie said though...
