Hey, im new at all this and just have got the internet on my computer. My internet is fine and runs well but its my computer that is annoying me..It has like 8% of disc space left and i have deleted everything i possibly can . i still have photos left in my documents but it tells me it larger than 4.29GB! Im not sure how to get my computer running faster, i try to run the disc defragmenter but it says it wont run properly with out 15% free disc space! I would love to hear everyones replies on how to help my computer run faster...and im sorry if this is a really silly thread but i didnt think asking would hurt!

Hi missa85. Try following these steps to make your computer run faster:

    1. Click Start< Control Panel< Add/Remove Programs and uninstall any programs that you don't use.
    2. While in the add/remove programs window click the button that says add/remove windows components and uncheck the checkboxes next to Indexing Service, MSN Explorer, Windows Messenger and click ok when you are done.
    3. Disable any Windows Services that you don't use by following Black Vipers Services Guide.
    4. Download and run ATF Cleaner and select all the checkboxes in the program then hit the empty selected button, http://majorgeeks.com/ATF_Cleaner_d4949.html.
    5. Run Disk Cleanup, Start< All Programs< Accessories< Sytstem Tools< Disk Cleanup. When its done calculating how much free space you can save make sure you check all the checkboxes except for compress old files. Once you select those checkboxes click the more options tab and under System Restore click the cleanup button and hit yes when it asks you if you want to delete all but the most recent restore point. Once you do that, click ok and allow disk cleanup to finish cleaning up your system.
    6. Download and run Auslogics Disk Defrag from here.
    7. Click Start< Right Click My Computer and click Properties. Click the advanced tab< Under performance hit settings< click advanced again and under virtual memory click change< Make sure your harddrive is selected and select the option that says system managed size and click the set button. Now Click ok on all the windows to close them out and reboot the computer.
    8. Click Start< Run type in cmd and press enter. In the command prompt window that opens type cd\ followed by enter. Next type the following command and press enter, chkdsk /r. A message will appear saying that check disk cannot run while the volume is in use. Type Y and hit enter. After thats done reboot the computer to allow check disk to run.
    9. Lastly, please fill out your System Details. It helps us in answering your questions.

Let me know if your computer is running any faster after performing the above steps. :)

To find how much RAM that you have installed click Start< Right click My Computer and click properties. Under Computer it will tell you how much RAM you have installed and what processor. Please let me know how much RAM your computer has installed and what processor your computer is running.

Also I would like to know what the capapcity of the harddrive is that Windows XP is installed on. To find this out click Start< My Computer. Right click the C drive and hit properties. Let me know what the capacity of the harddrive is and how much space is being used. Thanks.

Ok great. Your processor speed is adequate. But you could definitely increase the amount of RAM your computer has. 480 MB of RAM is not very much. Go to Crucial.com and run their memory scanner. It will tell what type of RAM your computer has and how much it can support. I would highly suggest that you go and buy more RAM for your PC. You will see a big performance boost by buying more RAM for your computer.

As for the harddrive see if you can free up more disk space but removing any other programs that you don't need. If you have freed up all the disk space that you can, then I would also recommend that you go out and buy an external harddrive for your PC that you can put all your documents, videos, music, pictures and other improtant data onto.
