I am using O.E. ver. 6.0.2900.5512 and I.E. ver 8.0.50727.3053. While downloading email, an error message pops up " Outlook Express has encountered a problem and needs to shut down." The information in the error report is APP ver. 6.0.2900.5512, Mod Name msvcr80.dll, Mod ver 8.0.507.3053, offset 00007C445. I can reopen O.E. and it will close again with the same message. This will continue until I am able to delete the file that O.E was in the process of downloading. It doesn't happen all of the time or on any particular sender. Recent upgrades I.E. 8.0, Adobe reader 9.1. Thanks.

    Welcome to WindowsBBS :)

We encourage all members to complete their System Specifications which help us to help you :)

My first inclination is that you have a corrupted Inbox .....

Make a new folder InboxOld and drag all the files in Inbox to it. Close OE

Search for *.dbx - include hidden files & folders, and delete Inbox.dbx - it will be recreated when OE is next opened.

While you have the list of dbx files on the screen check their size. The theoretical limit is 2 Gb, but OE plays funny long before then.

Start OE and drag the files from InboxOld to Inbox and delete InboxOld - test.

    Pete,
Thanks for the link to the system info program. I am working on updating my "My System" profile. I checked the in box .dbx file and it was small. I deleted it and created a new one. I will now have to wait for an email to cause to problem. I may not have been clear, this problem does not happen with all emails. I will post the results good or bad. Thanks for you help.

    Pete,
Well it didn't take long. The same problem appeared during the download of emails with the Inbox .dbx file refreshed. I added a inbox old, transfered the files deleted the inbox.dbx file and when I moved the inbox old to the inbox the same error message popped up. I found the offending file deleted it and OE is back to normal.

Yes - I understood that it was only certain emails, but thought it worth trying the generic fix.

Any specifics re. the emails which close OE? From a particular ISP as opposed to a specific sender which you posted was not the case.

    Take a look at .....

A Basic OE Repair Kit and follow it through - pass on re-registering msjava - it no longer exists in Windows.

    Pete,
Thanks. I will post the results. I may have one suspected sender and will block until I figure this out.

Pete, Sorry it took so long to reply. I find that all of the emails I receive from AOL cause the O.E. Shutdown problem. When they are downloaded or when I attempt to open them.

That is a new one on me and I honestly have no idea why that should occur.

I have edited your thread title to reflect this and asked the BBS Team Members for any opinions.

I'd suspect nothing wrong with OE, but rather something awry with AOL IMAP system or the one particular sender mentioned. It is possible to crash OE and Outlook using specially crafted malformed email headers. To solve the problem if it's caused by that one sender, login to AOL email via a browser and delete the message(s) from that sender, then logout and try to get messages using OE.

AOL is the senders Service. I don't have AOL. So far lately it has been every AOL email I have received . My provider is Road Runner and I use O.E. only. To make matters worse I moved a couple AOL emails to a temp folder to play with and when I went back later, they opened ok.

    Hello Pete C & All,
After much digging with no luck, I have changed email programs and the problem is gone.
    Thanks.
