    Hey,

I have a hp pavilion dv6000 series laptop. I have been working on windows vista 32 bit operating system and i am not at all paranoid about my operating system. The thing is, I was trying to resolve the windows vista updates which was kind of failing each and every time it tried to get installed(from 21st Aug., 2009- checked up in history) . I entered the following command :

    fsutil resource setautoreset true c

in order to rectify the problem (as suggested by the troubleshoot guide) but ended up with a blue screen saying "dumping my memory" and every since then my laptop is starting but not booting up. I got the backup using the Ubuntu (thank to Linux  ) 9.04.
Now the real bad thing: I have been trying to do system repair or in fact even tried re-installing windows vista to my system but it is not taking up anything from the bootable CD or the USB drive whichever I am using. Although it shows : Press Enter to boot from CD or DVD and after that when finally I reach the option to install windows and click on it, its running forever and same with the system repair.
I am really concerned what to do as in the process I don't want my hard drive to crash because of turning system on and off again and again. Doe anyone have a solution to my query. Thanks for looking up to it.

    Regards,
    Anuj

Another important things, I tried running windows XP and its saying hard drive not detected on the system. now this scares me even further either my hard disk is crashed or something have been changed in BIOS or in system using the previous command or anything else. The reason I believe my hard disk ain't crashed is because I was able to boot up my laptop from Ubuntu 9.04. Does Linux makes any difference to hard drive? Please help me out urgently. THanks

    Hi Arie,

I have a hp pavilion laptop with 32 bit windows vista operating system, 160 GB hard disk SATA hard drive maybe 5400 rpm, 2GB ram, 667 MHz( FSB) and 2.0 GHz processor T 5750 or T 7500 (either of them don't remember exactly). I checked up for my hard drive using bios both the primary and memory test and luckily both of them passed through. So i suppose my hard drive is fine and its jst not turning on. Maybe because of the same reason i am not being able to reinstall windows vista as well. Windows XP was a back up option, but i will try loading the drivers as suggested by you. I don't know how to check the manufacturer's disk diagnostics, as i don't know which make is my hard drive.
Ubuntu is not installed on my system, every time i am booting it up with my USB drive. I don't know how but I was able to take the back up of my data which i feared i was about to loose. Even in ubuntu it doesn't look like my hard drive is working ( as my laptop shows no light in the hard drive symbol) but still i am able to access all my files. Please let me knw to go about it.
If you want me to put more info. let me know how to check up for it as I am new using ubuntu as well and don't how to check the system specification. (I remember the system specification from windows vista i was using before). Thanks.

    Regards,

I assume HP will have diagnostic software. If you don't have a CD with it. you should be able to get it from their Web site.

    From an E-mail:

Anuj have you ran the harddrive diagnostics from HP yet? There has to be an option to enable or disable your SATA drive in the BIOS somewhere. At least you were able to access your personal data on the labtop.

what and where is the harddrive diagnostics that I can run from HP???? I have western digital hard drive WDC1600BEVS and don't know how to go about it. And again the weird thing is that it doesn't show up my hard drive in BIOS but once I boot from Ubuntu 9.04 (using a USB drive) it runs my hard drive perfectly, showing all the files i have in it. I don't know what else to do??? I am not being able to load any windows operating system.
I hope someone has a solution to it. Thanks

Since you said that you have a western digital harddrive then run the western digital diagnostics that Arie linked to and see if anything comes up.
