I noticed this week that my HP 1035r DVD Writer does not work on my desk top. I looked under hardware devices from the control panel and saw that it had the exclamation point with the yellow background. So I deleted it and went through the new hardware device scan and the driver for it was not found (I clicked on the online feature). I went to the HP support web page and saw that the device was no longer supported. I bought the device less than a year ago?!? Does anyone know where I can get the driver? Or is there a registery key that needs changing or deleting?

The driver for CD/DVD drives is a generic Windows driver - there are no specific drivers for individual optical drives.

There should be no need to make a hardware scan - remove/uninstall the drive through Device Manager and reboot and Windows will redetect the drive and load the driver.

If the problem still remains then the Windows driver may be corrupted and running System File Checker may resolve the problem. For this you will require a retail copy of the XP (? **) install CD at the same Service Pack level as the installed OS.

** Please fill in your System Details which help us to help you. We have no idea which OS you are using for a start :)

Your System Details (thanks for those) should be added to your profile following the link I posted - click on the arrowhead alongside My System in this post to see the end result.

Any progress on the recalcitrant DVD drive?

One final step to make them visible .....
To return to your original problem - you have not responded to my earlier suggestion ....
If you right click on the drive in Device Manager > Properties what is the status message displayed?

Do you have the opportunity to test the drive in another computer

I will try and run the System File Checker and get back to you. Imade the change to the Thread Display Options/System Specifications and selected YES.

Right Clicked on the device from Device manager and then clicked on properties and this is what I got:

Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardwareevice. (Code 41).

No it does not work either. I am beginning to expect that it might be the ribbon cable. That is what I will try to replace next.

Error was corrected looking for sysmptoms on Google.

This article was previously published under MS: Q314060

Error = An "error code 39" error message.
A message that resembles the following appears in the notification area:

Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)

    Windows Fix:

    Microsoft Windows XP

1 Click Start, and then click Run.
2 In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
3 In the navigation pane, locate and then click the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-
    E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
4 In the right pane, click UpperFilters.

Note You may also see an UpperFilters.back registry entry. You do not have to remove that entry. Click UpperFilters only. If you do not see the UpperFilters registry entry, you still might have to remove the LowerFilters registry entry.

5 On the Edit menu, click Delete.
When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
6 In the right pane, click LowerFilters.

Note If you do not see the LowerFilters registry entry, unfortunately this content cannot help you any further. Go to the "Next Steps "
section for information about how you can find more solutions or more help on the Microsoft Web site.

7 On the Edit menu, click Delete.
8 When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
    9 Exit Registry Editor.
    10 Restart the computer
