i just figured out I made a mistake with my latest PC, by getting Vista 32 bit, and now i realize i need a 64 bit OS.

i talked to the Shop from which I got the OS and most of the hardware and he agreed to let me exchange it with a 64 bit OS (once he makes sure he can activate it)

after running Vista for a bit less that 2 month and being less that satisfied Im thinking i should get XP 64 bit, but im wondering if it is a bit late to get XP.

XP is a great and stable OS. However consumers can no longer purchase copies/licenses of xp. HOWEVER oem shops can. Now if by "to late" you mean xp is outdate or some such then I would disagree, as XP is still a wonderful OS and is still supported by microsoft. (just not sold). If you dont like Vista (many dont) Go for XP IMO.

no i love XP there are 4 PCs at home 3 of which are on XP, only reason this was was on Vista is because I thought SP1 would enable me to use my 8GB of RAM. My main concern with XP is hardware drivers

XP has more hardware support then vista just to summarize my experience. IE XP has greater support due to it being out longer and more widely accepted by consumers.

Xp will be supported for both hardware/software/updates ect ect ect for atleast 4years or so. Though if your really that concerned (which IMO is misplaced) then Vista x64 should be used which you can then use to upgrade to win 7 (Microsoft newest os) when it is fully released. As of now Xp holds a 71% market share in the OS world. With Vista holding out at <18%

Win 7 (according to MS) uses the same driver's and hardware requirements as vista. I however can not speak of win 7 but hear its nice.

( I use Vista btw incase you were wondering)

Win 7 64 bit is amazing i have been using it for a month or so now, didnt have to install any drivers when I installed the OS, unlike XP, had to reinstall my OS and decided since i was going to format might as well play with Win7, Im not going back to XP now.... i have a dual core 2.0 with 2gb of ram and use aero with no slowness at all!!!

Oh yeah and Norton 2010 for antivirus is the way to go for the lowest overhead and best protection... nice to have an antivirus that doesnt get in the way

XP 64 will be a HUGE mistake & disappointment!

All people here praising XP do so because they run the 32-bit version! XP 64 is not worth your time. You'll run into numerous trouble, specially finding drivers!

Get Vista x64 or better yet, Windows 7 x64.

Windows 7? is it really ready? every time i tried an OS Pre SP2 i was very disappointed.

although it would make sense to skip Vista and just use the Latest OS

My perception is Win7 is like Vista SP2, i would normally be the same as you and wait but i don't think its needed, i have a friend running it on a p3 with 512 MB of ram and it runs fine

as you can see system requirements aren't really a concern, and im assuming all my hardware will be good to go (as far as drivers go), but win 7 didn't even cross my mind.

Go for Win 7 I say. From what I hear people have had good experiences with the RC.
XP while it is very good at the moment, the support for it will become less and less as I have seen on other forums.
You must remember though that some OS's are failures, yes I'm looking at you Vista, but I figure its only every second one so 7 should be good.
Hopefully 64bit will become more popular with more ppl and get better support than it has in the past. Heres hoping.

from what I have heard/understoood win7 is vista done the right way. You get your optional eye candy but also a pretty stable OS like xp is. ATM its still rc (not final/released) but is however stable and vista 64 drivers work for win 7 drivers when not found, but I have already seen some win7 drivers for certain things so it looks TO ME that win 7 will be ms's new flagship OS. And yes xp 64 drivers are indeed a pain to find <,<.

So you should get Vista x64 Home Prem(or w/e you choose really) and get a free win 7 upgrade when it is released.

64bit isnt going away. It has/will become the new standard for the consumer as more and more apps require greater and greater memory limits. 3.2~gbs while good "enough" for current *cough* apps it is an aging era. Just like 60gb HDDs. <,< im ranting. ANYWAY 64bit is great /end :p

EDIT* **** >.> cant delete post sorry for DP.
