Resolved SATA Hard disc not recognised

    I have a PC with MSI motherboard with VIA SATA and RAID enabled, running XP SP 2. I have 2 IDE hard drives and I have just installed a WD 500 GB SATA disc but it is not seen by my PC. I have looked in the AMI BIOS to see if there is reference to " Search for disc " and there is no such facility. I have tried swapping the data cable end for end and the power supply is OK as the drive is physically running. rebooted a number of times and looked on the WD website for any disc tools but they don't seem to provide them.
    Any suggestions where I'm going wrong and how I can resolve this problem please.

    SATA drive not recognised

    The MB came with VIA SATA RAID driver on floppy which has been "installed ". This shows on device manager but shows a code 10 error.
    Tried to install as "New hardware" but Hard drives do not feature.

    Normally the driver would be installed at F6 when Windows is installed - I recall with an old Asus mobo there were 2 drivers to be installed, but your mobo manual should have detail of this.

    One option may be to make a Repair install of Windows and load the driver at F6 on the install screen - make sure you have a data backup first :)

    I already filled in my system details some time ago and they are on file, I just checked.
    The MB manual with the MSI board is a large illustrated sheet with little fine detail. I will try a repair install of windows and see if this does anything.
    What is the difference between SATA and RAID, they always seem to be mentioned together?

    . You missed the last step :) ....
    SATA - Serial ATA - more the norm these days as opposed to PATA - Parallel ATA, the 'old' IDE.

    RAID - Random Array of Independent Disks - works on with both SATA & PATA drives, but if using SATA drives also need the SATA RAID controller.

    One thought that comes to mind check in the BIOS for SATA configuration and set to IDE - may also be a jumper on the drive - check the manual if available or the manufacturer's web site.

    I'll sort out my system details later meanwhile: My BIOS only refers to SATA once, under Integrated Peripherals when the entry reads V8237 SATA-IDE controller. The options are Enable or Disable and nothing else. They are currently Enabled. I will try repair install on XP after i Have backed up as much info as possible, probably tomorrow now.

    SATA drive not recognised

    My PC Has MSI KT6V MoBo with SATA/ Raid support. Got nowhere in getting it to "see" my new HD so scratched my head and did the following:
    Having achieved not a lot, I now have my new 500GB WD disk, a new PCI SATA raid card which takes me further along the line. Device Manager now recognises an additional disk, no letter allocated but called :WDC WD50 0AALA-00L3B2. SCSI Disk device. I still have no way of accessing this "device ".
    Any suggestions as to how to get it up and running please!

    Well Arie, thanks to your good advice, we seem to have progressed quite a way, after formatting the disk appears in "my computer" but shows as a disk full.
    Device manager shows the disk as " The device is working properly ".
    Attempting to re-format gives message "Windows was unable to complete the format ". Explorer seems to be working very slowly as it seems to be trying to access this disk (designated as "Drive "G "). Any further suggestions please?

    Stop Press!! I seem to have solved the problem using EASUS Partition manager. I can now access the whole 400oddGB SATA drive - still have no idea why XP couldn't hack it but thanks very much for your help
