I have a laptop with windows XP professional that i bought 2nd hand almost 3 years ago. up until now i have had no problems. my husband managed to get it infected with a virus  A friend bought webroot and minutes after installation it was fine. Then i uninstalled it because it was calling for additional $$ that i dont have. Then thanks to my husband once again, it's infected beyond compare!! Last time i was able to connect to internet, when i clicked to check email i was told "access denied" because of actions on my computer. I tried another site that had this really great 'malware removal' system which i downloaded and copied to a disk from this pc. once installed though i could not upload logs because no internet.
    Please help!!
I didn't get the XP disk but i saw...windows XP registration number or something to that effect.
What can i put on a disk so that i can erase hard drive and just be able to reinstall the bare basics???
Most of my personal stuff is already on disks. I don't have any cash to be able to take it in anywhere so if i want my laptop back...it's all on little ol me.
step by steps would be greatly apprieciated, :) thank you in advance and sorry for rambling

Hi kizmit. Before you perform a clean installation of Windows I would see if you can get your computer cleaned up by our malware experts on our forum.

Please read this and post the required logs in a new thread in the Malware and Virus Removal Forum.

If you still can't get your computer clean after asking for help in the Malware and Virus Removal Forum then post back in this thread and I will tell you how to perform a clean install of Windows.

    Hi Evan

Thank you sooo much for taking the time to answer my gry for help.
A couple of problems present themselves when it comes to being able to follow your directions...Somehow i lost the I.P. address (of laptop) so when i plug my modem cable into it, im told that it cant find/connect so, As far as the virus removal regimine, I had been advised to download a couple of various tools to run on my laptop and then to post the logs and so on....After finally managing to download on this pc, put them on a disk and run them from the disk on the lptp, i was informed that 1) I needed to be connected to internet to update tools and the virus definition regenerator something or other also needed internet. and soooo........
I have a back up disk that i made i guess shortly after getting lptp. Would i be able to use that as far as reinstalling a fresh start so to speak? If not, can you tell me if i can gopy particular files/folders from this pc (also running windows XP (?)) to a disk to install on lptp?? I don't have my validation key for this one but it is valid as well.
I feel completely stuck on stupid!!!
Thankx again for your time! ;)

Does the labtop have a recovery partition on it that you can use to restore your system? When you say you created a backup disk do you mean a Windows XP disk? You might be able to boot from that and perform a Repair Install of Windows XP from there. Did the labtop come with a reinstall disk that you can use?

sorry, i clicked resolved by mistake

    Hello again Evan,
More problems just keep cropping up! When I put the disk in my lptp and clicked on my computer, but it won't open the file 'Toshiba 2007 back up'. I went to command prompt and put same disk in lptp and typed in D:/dir and it listed 4 files and 1 directory. The 1 directory is, once again..Toshiba back up. I tried numerous things such as cd, chDIR, chkdsk...and the only prompt that continually comes is just D:/
Would it be possible to make a windows install disk on this pc that I could run on lptp. I can't even get the lptp to tell me about repartitioning or anything else for that matter.
I don't have a stick to copy logs onto to be able to use the malware removal/antivirus possible solutions. I have 3 blank disks left for info or programs via this pc. How could I find out about the I.P. address though?
    Please help. And again THANKS!!

Since it looks like you don't have a Windows XP CD and only a backup disk your pretty much SOL. :( See if you can borrow a Windows XP CD from a friend or co-worker and then run a repair install of the OS using the CD. I also assume that the labtop doesn't have a recovery partition?

I don't know anyone with a computer let alone a XP disk...I did go to www.microsoft.com and after fishing around I found a page that said I could be sent a Windows XP setup replacement disk. Luckily, I looked at the bottom of my lptp and found the XP validation code which was put there before first sold. The only problem is that I would find all of this on a holiday weekend....Oh well.
I want to say thank you for all of your input and advice.
By the way, do you know of any free Antivirus program that I can use to clear out lptp that doesn't have to connect to internet (one with it's own quarentine maybe)??

It would be better for you in this situation to get your internet going somehow on it. On this sick computer, go to Start\All Programs\Accessories\Command Prompt. When the Command Prompt window opens, do this command, pressing Enter at the end.
    ipconfig
You should see something like this appear:

    Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : xxxxxxxxxxxxxx
    IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.xxx (could be 172.16.0.xxx)
    Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0 (could be 255.255.0.0
    Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1 (could be 172.16.0.1)

If you see the below instead as it is here, your network adaptor is not functioning at all.

    Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
    IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 0.0.0.0
    Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 0.0.0.0
    Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . :

To Repair your network connection, do these commands.
    ipconfig /flushdns
    ipconfig /release
    ipconfig /renew

You can close the Command Prompt window.

Do you happen to have a third party firewall installed on the problem computer?

I don't believe so, I try to remember to close antivirus stuff before and while I'm doing things as far as that goes. I finally got rid of all the sickie things on lptp, now it's like I'm trying to start from scratch as the internet goes. It's a good thing I got this desktop to go online with or I wouldn't be able to access such valuable advice as you've given me (in other post),

Most computer repair shops will install a copy of XP Pro on your system for no money.(you do not need a serial numbe rot install XP Pro)
This will wipe your hard drive clean and you will will have to download new drivers for printers, speakers, etc.
