Let me start from the beginning, About two months ago my computer started having problems with running slowly and the the internet stopped working, and mozilla firefox wouldn't even open up. I downloaded AVG and tried the full scan at least three times, every time the my whole computer would freeze so i would have to turn it off then back on.

Then I tried System restore, didn't work the first couple times, then It finally worked, my internet problem was solved, but my computer kept updating automatically late at night. and every time the internet would stop working. so I had to system restore every day for about a week, so I wanted to stop this, so I went to the windows solution center,

It said i needed updates, in there was Windows Service Pack 1, so I clicked complete upgrade. an hour or so in while updating my whole computer froze. so I turned it off then back on. It says Windows can't boot correctly so it takes me to a screen that say start up normally or run system repair, so I clicked sytem repair, after a few minutes of a bar loading it asks if I want to do a system restore so I click yes, but It has to fix any errors, meanwhile the interface looks like windows 98 or something, it doesn't look like Vista at all.

So there is a blue bar going across a window like it's loading, so i let it sit for a few hours, I come back it's still doing the same thing. So I trun it off then back on again and go through the motions one more time, except I let the computer sit on the screen with the progress bar for over 24 hours. I wake up in the morning, It's still the same. So I go through the motions again except when asked if I would like to system restore I say no. so It passes the loading bar and goes to a black screen, and appears to be loading files for example it looks like this:
    123546 of 1275463 (dfskljdfl;kasjfdkl;asjfkl;asjdl;fkjasdl;f)

eventually it freezes and before the numbers a this appears :
    " OxC01C001D " .

So I have no idea what to do please help, anything is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks Yale

    Welcome to WindowsBBS :)

This is an Operating System issue and should have been posted in the appropriate forum.

I have moved your thread to the Vista forum as you mention Vista in your post.

Did you check for earlier System Restore points
To be honest, if System Restore and Startup Repair cannot get it running again, MS don't offer any "easy" fixes. A websearch for that code gets no hits, check for the difference between zeros and the letter O. Still, I don't expect it would tell us much. MS say to do a reformat and reinstall.

Was the "repair" a Startup Repair or a System Repair? If it was startup, when you go further in the Vista installer you should find it offers to repair the system.

Is your data backed up? If you don't have a backup system, my suggestion is to get a HDD that will fit your system, 2.5" for a laptop, 3.5" for a desktop and I expect it is SATA not IDE, you will need to look up the system specifications (put them in your user profile - My System). Get an external hard disk drive enclosure, put your current HDD in that, put the new HDD in your computer and install Vista on that. You can get the data from the external drive, then look at formatting it and using it for backup.

Look at the amount of time you have lost with a slow, sick and now non-working system. I would just back up the data and reformat.

Sorry if it was not very clear. You need to find out what sort of HDD is in the computer now. You buy one that is the same type. You take your current HDD out of the computer and put it into the external enclosure. You put the new HDD into your computer and install Vista on that.

With Vista installed on the new HDD you can access the data on the old HDD in the external enclosure.
