I have a problem with applying hibernation to my computer.

When I press "apply" it comes up with the following message.

"The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another program ".

I used to be able to hibernate so what is wrong I am at a loss to understand.

Perhaps someone out there might be able to give me guidance.

    Thank you

Try this: Start > Run and type msconfig.

Select Selective Startup, and uncheck all items. Click Apply & OK, reboot. Now enable hibernate from the Control Panel > Power Options. Go back into msconfig & choose Normal Startup, reboot one last time.

Thank you for your response but I am afraid that it did NOT work.

In fact it has now created many more problems in so much I cannot now do a system restore beyond to day. I am being asked to re validate my copy of Windows within 3 days and I have now had to send Microsoft the following e-mail :-

I am advised by a Pop Up that "This copy of Microsoft has to re Reactivated within 3 daysâ€.

As you are aware I purchased a genuine copy in 2008 and was supplied with a product key which commences with HPJXY and ends with P99D3.

The order number was 2000931753 on 3 June 2008.

Can you please help me since both the telephone numbers given to me are both TOLL numbers but whether in the UK or USA I do not know.

One number, an 0800 number and if I dial the UK it is a ticket agency. I am now at a loss what to do.

    Perhaps you have some ideas.

Hmmm... knowing practices here in Malta, good chance you have a bootlegged copy & booting the Selective Startup stopped the software 'hack' they had running to keep your system up.

See if you can Validate your copy of XP.

I have read your comments and once again your comments assume I have a bootlegged copy because I live here in Malta as you do.

Mine is a "kosher" copy purchased direct from Microsoft in June 2008. The copy was re- validated by Microsoft yesterday.

Further problems arising from your initial advice is that I cannot now open "Defender ", "Help and Support " and the sound has now disappeared from my speakers.

What next advice have you got for me.

    Hi,

If you're sure your copy is "kosher" you are part of the minority here :)

Now, all the problems you are having have nothing to do with booting to Selective Startup, and back to normal startup.

I would suggest first checking to see if there's no Malware running on the system:

Read this post, then post the requested log(s) in the Malware and Virus Removal forum.

    Thank you for your input.

Because of the so called pirated copies here in Malta and which was originally installed on my computer, in order to get the best from Microsoft, I purchased what they call "Windows XP Genuine Advantage" kit or disc direct from Microsoft. This only cost me €141.51 including VAT.

Since my last missive I did a reload with the disc and after many, many setups it now appears to work except 'Hibernate' and 'Help and Support'. I shall try to live with that for the present.

I also had to reload my Anti virus disc, original and paid for plus I had to reload part of my printer disc.

Malware does not seem to be a problem since I use Malwarebytes' Anti- Malware.

Thank you once again for your concerns.

Try booting in safe mode & delete the hiberfil.sys file from the root of the C drive (hidden file).
