Sorry, Pete, I'm a newbie at this site.

    Here's the info you requested:IE8 - XP SP3.

I suspect one of my security settings is the problem, but I have no idea which setting I need to change.

    No problem :) I did ask ....
What exactly happens when you try to download?

If you right click the download button > Save target as - any luck?

If you are able to download other files I would not suspect a security setting.

The message I get is "your current security settings do not allow downloading of this file" or some such excuse. Right clicking and trying the target method produces the same result.

I get the same message when trying to download email attachments sometimes. Not all the time. I can download ITunes and UTube videos, so something just isn't right.

    Any other ideas?

Thanks, Pete. I checked the website you suggested and got bogged down reading some of the suggestions. I can download with Firefox, but like using IE for some reason. I have tried changing my security settings to make them more lax (which is frightening these days), but that still doesn't solve my problem.

Something else IE does to me is that when I get my email from eBay and click on an item that is listed as something offered on one of my saved searches, my screen minimizes into the upper left corner and the item file doesn't open. In Firefox, I get connected right to the item on eBay and I can decide if I want to bid or just watch the item or delete it.

Most people would tell me to just use Firefox, but I want to know more about what the settings on my computer should be to allow me to do what I want without opening myself to hackers and other weirdos. I'm no techy. Just a retiree stumbling through cyberspace.

I agree that using Firefox is a straight workaround and not a solution :) The fact that Firefox works as it should is indicative of a problem in IE.

Have you tried a Reset as I suggested?

IE8 can be buggy on some systems - I suggest you uninstall it and roll back to IE7 as outlined here .....

How do I uninstall or remove Internet Explorer 8?

Test IE7 for downloads - if successful reinstall IE 8 from here - save to your hard drive and run .....

I will try your suggestion. Right now I am babysitting for my grandchildren, and have to tend to that joy right now!

Life is still crazy, but I finally got a chance to play with my laptop again, and, Pete, it turns out that I am using IE 7 on this computer after all. I have IE 8 on my desktop, and that one opens the programs just fine. I'm thinking I should download IE 8 for this laptop. Would you agree?

Okay, Pete. I think I know why I don't have IE 8 in use. I downloaded it, but when I tried to installed it, I received an error message that said I needed to download an update and that I should click on the button to get that download. I was directed to Update for Windows XP (KB932823). I downloaded it, but when it attempted to install, I received an annoying message that said "Setup has detected that the Service Pack version of this system is newer than the update you are applying. There is no need to install this update." The had an OK button to click which was my only option.

I am guessing that it is SP3 that has the improved update.

Now that I think about it, when I went to download IE 8, I wasn't given an option for IE 7 with SP3 as my current application pairing, so I had to choose IE& with SP2 or I seemed to have nowhere to go.

I am open to more suggestions, but am going to bed and will be very busy with church, grandkids and meals tomorrow.

Thank you so much for your continued efforts to try to help me.

Which version of IE are you actually using? - Help > About Internet Explorer

SP3 does not include IE7, but an enhanced version of IE6 - which really complicates matters in terms of the ability to roll back to a previous version.

BTW - KB932823 refers to a problem with downloading when ....

I am using IE 7 and had installed the SP3 separately, not at the same time at IE 7. I didn't quite understand the rest of your message. Just got home and am going to bed, so maybe I'm just too sleepy to figure out your message. Please add any info to help clarify your message.
    Thanks.

    To clarify ....
SP3 surprisingly does not include IE7, but an enhanced version of IE6. This means that if you install IE7 before you install SP3 you cannot uninstall IE7 to roll back to IE6 because the version of IE6 on your computer (yes, it is still there :)) is not the same.

To uninstall IE7 in the scenario above you must first uninstall SP3 followed by IE7 which will roll you back to IE 6.

If you then re-install SP3 followed by IE7 the latter can be uninstalled to roll you back to the revised IE6.

One wonders why MS chose to update IE6 in this way and indeed why they did not include IE7 in the Service Pack.

    I suggest you update to IE8 .....

    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/internet-explorer/default.aspx

I am assuming that you do not have your keyboard set to the Japanese Input Method Editor as default thus the update is not required and I am puzzled as to why you were offered it.

    Pete,

What in the world does this mean?
.... the Japanese Input Method Editor (IME) is the default keyboard layout. This problem occurs because the Msctf.dll file sends the download command to an invalid thread.

What is an IME (Input Method Editor) and how do I use it?....
    For thread read wrong address.

Really - none of the above should be of concern unless you have your keyboard set to type an East Asian language.

Now I'm really confused. I can't install IE8 even though I have dowloaded it. So, should I do all those steps to uninstall SP3 and IE7 as you mentioned? I don't know what order I installed the various items, so I guess I would just have to try both scenarios you suggested.

The other concern is that I don't know how to check if I have allowed the Chinese characters thingy to be on my computer. I have received emails with Chinese characters from Chinese friends, but they write the English for me so I can read them. I also use Portuguese and like having all those wonderful accent marks available for my writing to friends in Brazil.

At present I just don't have the time to fuss with the uninstall, but will hopefully have time in the next few weeks. I don't get a lot of opportunities to be gainfully employed here in the very depressed economy in Michigan, so when I can work, I am working! And I'm not at home on my laptop.

Thanks again for all your help. After I hear from you again, I will know better how to proceed.

What happens when you try - error messages?

You can check which keyboards are installed on your system through .....

Control Panel > Regional & Language > Languages tab > Details

I am sorry to hear of your situation in these difficult times - just post back when you can.

As a workaround to the problem of AIM can you not download on a friend's computer and save to a USB stick for installation on your laptop ? - or download Firefox and try that.
