OK, a few questions with regards to Microsoft's latest OS.

Have you tested the OS? Are you planning to start using it?

Please note that "upgrade" in the context of this poll can mean an upgrade, clean install or getting a new PC with the OS pre-installed.

I will run this old BOAC on Windows XP Professional until I build the next one which probably will run Windows 7.

Like Christer, I'll stick with XP Pro until my next computer.

By that time, the Gnomes of Redmond may even have some of the bugs patched out of Windows 7 and moved on to Windows 8 or Windows Galactic, or whatever hyped-up marketing name they decide to give it.

Ditto, perhaps another option required? I won't upgrade when 7 is released but I wouldn't say I'd stick with XP as long as possible either.

So far (60 days now) everything I find in Win7 has been appealing (once I turned UAC off). I have found nothing that would cause me to shy away from it once it is released for sale. Just one older program (Fireworks MX) that changes Aero to basic mode when run... no big whoop.

I am sticking with Windows XP until my computer dies. I learned that upgrading to Vista wasn't the smartest move on my part but it was a pretty good experience none the less. Vista ran much slower that my XP installation so I went back to XP. Once the motherboard dies on my computer I will replace it and then I will upgrade to Windows 7 from XP.

I've been "testing" W7 RC7100 for about a month now and I can honestly say it has potential "” once the tweakers have all the annoying things I don't like fixed. There seems to be (IMNSHO) too much "eye candy" for no apparent reason; it's pretty, but useless.

Like many others on the BBS, I use XP's Classic view for that very reason. It's clean, simple, and straight-forward. Having never used Vista, I don't know if the Classic view was an option, and I wonder if it's an option in Windows 7.

I tried Wdos. 7 and had nothing but trouble. Just the other day I tried Wdos. 8 and it locked up my computer! The only reason I tried Wdos. 8 was a couple of my programs are recommending it.

Nothing was clickable and I was tearing my hair out - what a waste of time. I removed it - went back to 6 and all is working fine.

I think you are referring to Internet Explorer 7 and 8 as I have never heard of ``Windows 8`` - at least, not as an operating system...

    deg9814 ...

Are you sure you're not talking about Internet Explorer, rather than Windows?

    cspgsl ...

    Sorry, cross-post. :)

I won't upgrade Vista right away but I will take a few months to save up enough to upgrade while watching the Windows 7 forum here to see how it works out for others who have upgraded.

I wish I had waited to buy this new computer - then I could get a discounted upgrade.......

I've been running Win7 since the M3 build (Beta and RC on the same system).
Built a new system for it.
Will keep my old OS's on my other systems and will use the new system for the RTM on August 6

...you and a boatload of other tech-savvy people. I think once a lot of peeps try the 7 RC it'll be hard for them not to jump on board the Win 7 Express! Once they load it up and see that 7 loads every (or almost every) single driver they need automatically, it will be hard not to sit there in awe! My friend said he was even able to get a driver from M$ for his X-Fi card without going to Creative!!! The install of the Win 7 RC was an absolute pleasure. What could be a nail in Vista's coffin is that I've heard that Win 7 runs MUCH BETTER on older, slower hardware.

What amazes/disappoints me is just how little M$ has changed the OS' user interface from XP...heck, or even Windows 98. It's simply...prettier. In my book that doesn't really cut it. What's up? All the creative people work for Apple??? You would think that by now we'd be launching apps by having the computer interpret our eye movements but no - we have to click on the same old desktop icons (*as spoken by Eeyore*). For example, I actually have a little trouble lassoing files in Explorer in 7. No such trouble in XP. And its actually because of the enhanced graphics in 7!

I think the real undercurrent here isn't so much in switching to a new OS. It's switching to a 64-bit OS. If you're going to run a 32-bit OS, it's almost like why switch from XP to 7 or even XP to Vista for that matter?? Even tho I was pretty certain of the answer, I asked my friend if Win 7 32-bit (or even Vista 32-bit) had the same memory limitations as XP 32-bit. When he said "yes" I still couldn't help but be somewhat shocked.

But I'm running the Win 7 64-bit RC and it's been flawless. From what I hear, a lot more peeps are switching to 64-bit now than ever before. I've also heard from some of the mega-nerd community that 64-bit development is going to take off.

I pre-ordered the Win 7 "Upgrade" for $50. The stories circulating about how M$ is going to implement the upgrade are rampant and seem to be a bit nutty (on M$' part). If the upgrade turns out to be crazily restrictive, I may simply ebay the upgrade and buy the full version.

One option you might have wanted to add to the poll: "I will dual-boot Win 7 with an older M$ OS ".
That's what I've been doing for quite some time now.

What others call eye candy I simply call annoying. I don't like attempts to catch my attention---I'm here to get some stuff done; I'm not trying to "have an experience ". :p

My next system will tri-boot W7, Mepis Linux 8, and W98. If you're looking for a classic view, try the latter.

And no, It's not "time to move on ". :p

    Regards,

    Henipatra

    cspgsl,
Sorry I was in the wrong area. It was Windows I.E. 8 - another place it said Windows 8 I think.

Thanks for the reply anyway. I resolved my problem and took it off.
I am running Windows XP and will continue with that.
