I have an external USB drive that I am trying to cleanup. There is a backup on it of someone ele's system that I am trying to delete. It will not allow me to delete the System.EnterpriseServices.dll file, telling me that Access is denied. I have tried botting into Safe Mode to get rid of it, no luck. I unplugged the drive and rebotted, then plugged it back in. No luck. Can anyone help me solve this pesty problem?

Pops - you can try a program called Unlocker. Here is the URL for it....
    http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/

The program will unlock the file and give you the ability to delete it.

Thanks Barbara-Ann. You are right, Unlocker is a great program. However, it can't delete this file. It tells me that it can't delete it now and asks if I want to delete it on the next reboot. I say yes, reboot, and the file is still there. I try deleting it and I have the same message.

As this is a backup of another system you may need to take ownership of the file - part of .Net .....

How to take ownership of a file or a folder in Windows XP
Simplest way is a reformat, but I guess there are reasons why you do not want to do this.

Pops - the file belongs to an installation of .NET Framework.
You could right click on the folder (or file) and change permissions to the contents (giving whomever is listed complete control) and then try to delete it again.

I am replying to both PeteC and Barbara-Ann. You both seem to be pointing me in the direction of taking ownership of the file. That is something new to me. I tried following the instructions in the link PeteC sent me but I hit a dead end as the Security Tab on the properties of the file in question is not there. Barbara-Ann, it sounds like your instructions are essentialy the same. So, what do I do since the security tab is not there?

Thanks PeteC. I will try this later today. And yes, I reaize I should have given system details. Wasn't thinking but I appreciate the reminder.

Sorry for the delay in my response to all who have contributed. This situation just keeps getting strnager. I did as suggested and booted in Safe Mode so that I could see the security Tab. When I do that, the sysem does NOT see the folder in question, although in normal Windows mode it does. Sounds like a disk problem? I ran a CHKDSK and all reported back fine with no erros. I use ZASS 8.0. I ran a full virus scan on both drives, nothing found. I ran a full spyware scan on both drives, nothing found.

I remain stumped but determined to solve this.

In looking at Cipher, several things come at me. First of all I have XP Home and the searching I did says it only comes with XP Pro and the version of Cipher that you can download will only install on Windows 2000. Even assumming I missed something in my research, I am not understanding what Cipher would do for me in this situation where I just want to delete this file?

Did you see the other URL in the one I posted originally which does not require the use of Safe Mode?

Yes - Doug Knox is completely reliable and XP is built on the NT core.

Solution found, but I don't understand why. The file and folder in question that I could not delete came from a backup of someone else's system that was done to my external drive. No longer needing this backup, I wanted to reclaim the disk space and so tried deleting it, and the system would not allow it. After many hours of trying to figure this out, I took the external drive and connected it to another system I have and there, I could delete it!

That's great but I sure would like to understand what was going on and why this worked.

Also, thank to all who responsed to my post. I only recently discovered this forum and it has proven itself to be quite valuable to me and I really appreciate the knowledge all of you contribute!
