I have tried to copy the ops disc, the vital one that's used each time one wants to play the game, but it seems cannot be copied. Since the nature of its use(unlike the basic program discs that are never used) one would think that because the disc would invariably get scatched, which mine has & eventually unuseable through fair wear & tear, an option to copy would be allowable. Is there a means to backup this disc, or in the event of accidental damage or fair wear & tear, one will be left unable to play the game anymore - many thanks for any help

What happens when you try to copy it - any specific messages?

How are you trying to copy it? A direct copy/burn using third party software or attempting to copy to the hard drive and burning from there? I have found the latter method the best as I have come across the odd CD which will not copy directly through burning software.

Does the disk still function in running the game - this would indicate that it is being read.

    Which Operating System ?

The disc works fine at the present, the message on screen is 'cannot read file' (Imgburn/image from disc option) am using XPhome & everything is up to date!
    Thanks for your response

I'm not familiar with Image Burn, but if the option Image from Disk implies a 'direct' copy of the source CD to a blank CD I would try the other approach ....

Copy the CD to a folder on your hard drive and burn directly from that copy.

The message 'cannot read file' suggests to me that there is a problem with the original disk which you say is scratched. The file in question may well be an installation file and not one which is needed to be read from the CD when playing the game.

See this Google search for 'Recover scratched CD' ......

    Hi, Zulubase. :)

I suspect Digital Rights Management (DRM) [ie., copyright protection] methods may be preventing you from copying the original game CD to another location.

While your reasoning seems reasonable :), the game developers may have deliberately prevented you from easily creating "backup copies" of the game.

There seems to be some hot debate around the Internet about the "fair use" issue regarding consumers' perceived rights (or lack of rights) to make backup copies of games/music/movies. Some people also seem to say games run more smoothly when the game disc is "emulated" on the computer's hard drive.

Software packages designed to circumvent DRM methods appear to be available in various places. However, I will not point you in any specific directions (so I do not violate any Posting Rules, specifically Rule #10). If you decide to investigate further, then proceed with caution.
