    My windows XP freezes sporadically on start up. Sometimes I have to shut down and reboot several times before it starts. Also when it boots, the MsiINstaller keeps coming up showing that it's trying to install something. Checked the Events Viewer and found this warning:Detection of product {75D46594-4DE1-4A90-AE74-38637D301EF2}feature PF Program files failed during request: for component {9411794A-4CD-4BD7-BA4A-E8E4F22C26E1}
Don't know how to figure out what program it's trying to install or if this is causing the freeze?:

Hi Heartfelt. Follow these steps to make your computer run faster:

    1. Click Start< Control Panel< Add/Remove Programs and uninstall any programs that you don't use.
    2. While in the add/remove programs window click the button that says add/remove windows components and uncheck the checkboxes next to Indexing Service, MSN Explorer, Windows Messenger and click ok when you are done.
    3. Disable any Windows Services that you don't use by following Black Vipers Services Guide.
    4. Download and run ATF Cleaner and select all the checkboxes in the program then hit the empty selected button, http://majorgeeks.com/ATF_Cleaner_d4949.html.
    5. Run Disk Cleanup, Start< All Programs< Accessories< Sytstem Tools< Disk Cleanup. When its done calculating how much free space you can save make sure you check all the checkboxes except for compress old files.
    6. Download and run Auslogics Disk Defrag from here.
    7. Click Start< Right Click My Computer and click Properties. Click the advanced tab< Under performance hit settings< click advanced again and under virtual memory click change< Make sure your harddrive is selected and select the option that says system managed size and click the set button. Now Click ok on all the windows to close them out and reboot the computer.
    8. Do you have Windows XP Service Pack 3 installed? If you don't then download it from here.
    9. For your Windows Installer problem, download and run the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility.
    10. I would also recommend that you download and install the latest version of Windows Installer. Download Windows Installer 4.5.

Let me know if your computer is any faster after performing the above steps. :)

Evan - the computer is not running slow - it is freezing ....
Heartfelt - The first step is to check out your hard drive .....

Start > Run > type in cmd > Enter

In the Command Window which opens type at the flashing cursor cd\ followed by Enter

At the C:\ prompt type chkdsk /r followed by Enter

A message will be shown to the effect that chkdsk cannot be run now as the volume is in use ...... Type y at the flashing cursor and reboot.

Chkdsk will run on boot. There is always an element of risk with disk checking so a backup of your important data is, as always, highly recommended.

Alternatively run the disk manufacturer's diagnostic software ....

    Disk Diagnostic Software ....

    ExcelStore

    Hitachi/IBM

    Samsung

    Seagate, Maxtor, Quantum

    Western Digital

You may have a problem with RAM too.

The MsiInstaller message may be part of the problem although I doubt it. The Windows Installer Cleanup Utility is not too helpful in this respect as it lists programs not their numeric strings, so identifying which program is causing that problem is not straightforward.

Post the entire Event Viewer message ...

Double click on the Event to open and on the icon below the up/down arrows to copy to clipboard and paste here.

The first numeric string you posted is Windows Installer AFAIK, the second is not found on Google which may or may not be significant.

Thanks all but I'm still in trouble. Here is where I'm at now. After following Pete's suggestion to chkdsk, computer froze after rebooting. Shut it down and couldn't boot up again. However, when I open computer and shoot in some compressed air it booted up but froze again. Tried to reboot. Nothing.

Prior to that followed Evan's advise and when I tried to use Installer Cleanup Utility I got this message:Script:c:docume~1\owner\locals~1\temp\1xp000.tmp\startmsw.vbs line:2 char:1 Error:activex component can't create object wscript.shell code:800A01AD source:microsoft vb script runtime error

    Okay, I haven't got a clue??????????

At this point I would just go ahead and follow Aries advice and post a new thread in the Malware and Virus Removal Forum. It looks like your problem could be malware related. We need to make sure your computer is clean and free of malware before progressing with troubleshooting this issue. After your computer is free of malware post back in this thread and we'll go from there.

Thanks again Evan. First, though, I have to figure out how to reboot the darn computer. I didn't make a reboot disk for it and not sure if I can reboot from Gateway restoration disk without wiping out everything. Once I get booted up I'll check out for virus again but I have been running Webroot and it hasn't detected anything. I think Gateway came with Mcafee which I removed and recently used a removal program to make sure remnants were gone. Don't have "defender pro antispy." Starting to feel like a real dummy here.

Did you try to boot in Safe Mode?
Are the lights on? Can you hear hard drive spinning, fans running?

Grrrrrr! Broni, thanks. Computer won't allow me to boot in safe mode. Sometimes it will boot up and then freeze after I get into desktop. (Cursor moves but can't open anything). At other times I hear a quick whirring when I try to boot, lights flash and then it dies. A couple of times I opened it up and gave it a bit of compressed air. It then booted and froze again. Also if I leave it awhile it will sometimes boot. Can't be overheating that fast though.

Also, I just bought a program called spotmau that cleans windows and will allow you to boot by overwriting MB. Used it and was able to boot. Still froze. So the hard drive seems to be able to boot from a disk but now I can't get the CD drive open.

I think, you need to test some hardware...

    1. If you have more than one RAM module installed, try starting computer with one RAM stick at a time.
If you have only one RAM stick installed...
    ...run memtest: http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic62524.html

    2. Run hard drive diagnostics: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287
Make sure, you select tool, which is appropriate for the brand of your hard drive.
Depending on the program, it'll create bootable floppy, or bootable CD.
If downloaded file is of .iso type, use ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/ to burn .iso file to a CD, and make the CD bootable.

NOTE. If your hard drive is made by Toshiba, unfortunately, you're out of luck, because Toshiba doesn't provide any diagnostic tool.

Okay, these suggestions are all good but how can I run the diagnostics or do anything for that matter when my computer immediately freezes when I boot?

You don't boot to Windows. You boot from diagnostic CD.

Well, thanks for all the advise. I did everything including the diagnostics which came up fine. I am able to boot from a cd but still freezing at desktop. I guess at this point my last resort is to use the system restore and re-install everything. If anyone has some last minute ideas they will be welcome.
