[Active] Random computer freezing; McAfee scans frozen as well

Howdy guys,

It seems that there is an issue with my girlfriend's computer. She's noticed that it has been running slowly for the past week or so but now it's gotten to the point where the computer will freeze on her and be unresponsive. I suggested that she disconnect it from the internet and try to run a McAfee scan, which she did, but it would detect something and then lock up and freeze (even the time would cease to move) Any ideas on what to do about this problem? Thanks a lot for your help!

Ah, right! Sorry about that, forgot that had to be done. I'll have her do that ASAP. Thanks Arie!

Print these instructions out.

NOTE. If any of the programs listed below refuse to run, try renaming executive file to something else; for instance, rename hijackthis.exe to scanner.exe

STEP 1. Download SUPERAntiSpyware Free for Home Users:
http://www.superantispyware.com/

* Double-click SUPERAntiSpyware.exe and use the default settings for installation.
* An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program.
* If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes ". If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Updates ". (If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download and unzip them from here: http://www.superantispyware.com/definitions.html.)
* Close SUPERAntiSpyware.

PHYSICALLY DISCONNECT FROM THE INTERNET

Restart computer in Safe Mode.
To enter Safe Mode, restart computer, and keep tapping F8 key, until menu appears; select Safe Mode; you'll see "Safe Mode" in all four corners of your screen

* Open SUPERAntiSpyware.
* Under Configuration and Preferences, click the Preferences button.
* Under General and Startup tab, make sure, Start SUPERAntiSpyware when Windows starts option is UN-checked.
* Click the Scanning Control tab.
* Under Scanner Options make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):
- Close browsers before scanning.

- Terminate memory threats before quarantining.

* Click the Close button to leave the control center screen.
* Back on the main screen, under Scan for Harmful Software click Scan your computer.
* On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive.
* On the right, under Complete Scan, choose Perform Complete Scan.
* Click Next to start the scan. Please be patient while it scans your computer.
* After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click OK.
* Make sure everything has a checkmark next to it and click Next.
* A notification will appear that Quarantine and Removal is Complete. Click OK and then click the Finish button to return to the main menu.
* If asked if you want to reboot, click Yes.
* To retrieve the removal information after reboot, launch SUPERAntispyware again.
- Click Preferences, then click the Statistics/Logs tab.
- Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
- If there are several logs, click the current dated log and press View log. A text file will open in your default text editor.

The GMER log is too long (it would have to be split into 6 parts) Did you need the log even though nothing came up from it (there was no message detecting a rootkit or any other form of malware, at least not in the way the website said it did) Or is there an easier way of uploading that log to you?

And finally, the HijackThis log:

I don't see anything malicious.

1. How much RAM is installed on that machine?

2. Please download JavaRa to your desktop and unzip it to its own folder
• Run JavaRa.exe, pick the language of your choice and click Select. Then click Remove Older Versions.
• Accept any prompts.
• Open JavaRa.exe again and select Search For Updates.
• Select Update Using Sun Java's Website then click Search and click on the Open Webpage button. Download and install the latest Java Runtime Environment (JRE) version for your computer.

3. Unless you installed Viewpoint Manager knowledgeably...
Go Start>Control Panel>Add\Remove (Programs and Features in Vista), and...
Uninstall any of the following programs associated with Viewpoint:
* Viewpoint Manager
* Viewpoint Media Player
* Viewpoint Toolbar
This program does not do anything bad such as deliver ads or spy on you, but it is considered foistware ( "drive-by-install ") as it is installed without your consent through programs like AOl, AIM, Compuserve, etc.

4. Download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Unselect Cookies.
Click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox browser
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Unselect Cookies.
Click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Opera browser
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Unselect Cookies.
Click the Empty Selected button.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

5. Let me know, if there is any improvement. In next step, we can disable some unnecessary startups.

Thanks for the quick reply.

1. I believe there is 512MB installed, as the system info says 504MB. It's just that it's a slightly old machine so the RAM slots aren't as up to date (I don't believe they're running on ddr2, definitely not ddr3)

2. I tried to clear up some disk space by uninstalling Google Earth but it ended up freezing on me. Does that indicate that there might still be a threat onboard?

3. Whenever I try to access My Computer, that's when it locks up and freezes. I needed to access that in order to get to the jump drive for the files you listed above and that was when it froze on me yet again. I couldn't run the two programs as requested, maybe this is a memory issue?

Thank you again for your help.

Hi Broni,

Sorry, I just left the computer and my girlfriend isn't comfortable enough to run those programs on her own. I don't know that I'll have access to it before next week so I want to be fair to the others on the thread (I understand you guys are backed up) and I'll just bump this next Saturday instead if that's okay.

Thank you so much for your time and patience.

Hey Broni,

It looks like frustration is winning over this battle for this frozen culprit. I haven't been able to access the computer for myself but she has tried to use it to upload her documents and such but it still isn't in a usable state and she was wondering if reformatting the computer would solve the issue. I'm fine with reformatting the whole thing but I just want to be sure that there isn't going to be a threat still around after that happens. Plus I don't know if that will just throw all of your work out the window. Thanks again for your help and patience with this whole thing. Maybe you can offer your opinion on what to do? To reformat or not to reformat?

It looks like we're not really dealing with any infection here. There was barely anything present.
If you're not worrying about the data, or you have it backed up, I'd give fresh install a shot.
It'll definitely answer the main question.
Is it kind of normal sluggishness after years of using the computer, or we're dealing with some hardware issues?
If you'll decide to get a fresh start, and after reinstalling Windows, the computer works fine for a week, or two, I'd definitely get another 512MB of RAM there.
