Neighbor has an old HP with Windows ME and he is trying to do a Defrag. It doesn't seem to be working as he sets it to defrag his 15Gig hard drive and after 2 hours it is still at 0%, nothing happening. As far as he can tell there is nothing runningin the background.

    Later. Pepse.

Well... not much advise I can give... he may not have enough available free space, check how much he has. should be at least 15% of total hard disk space.

    One thought...

Have you tried running defrag in safe mode, not sure about ME (I skipped that OS) but with 98 defrag would restart everytime the swapfile was accessed. Safemode prevented this from happening.

Hmmm, didn't think of that. It's worth a try. Gotta wait 'til the neighbor wakes up.

Okay, to update, The aforementioned computer was something the neighbor bought at a thrift store and since he doesn't have the internet I downloaded a copy of Avast for his computer and he is running it now and he has a lot of trojans, worms, adware, and whatever else. And that is after about 65% scanned. So, we're thinking that after all is done he should be able to run a defrag. If not he will try to defrag though Safe Mode.

    Hello again,

I understand the problem re no internet, but try to work with your neighbour and use the excellent advice offerred on the Malware and Virus Removal forum. Read this first if you decide to do so. Note DDS isn't compatible with ME but I'm sure one of the experts will be happy to give you further instructions.
