Hello, sorry for being dumb but I downloaded a file called "plugin.ocx" and when I hit the open button a box popped up and asked me what I wanted to open it with: Here are my choices.

    cmmgr32
    drwatson
    exploer
    fontview
    grpconv
    hh
    iexplore
    isingup
    kodakling
    kodakprv
    mplayer
    mplayer2
    msinfo32
    mspaint
    notepad
    regedit
    rundll32
    wab
    wb32
    winhelp32
    wordpad
    wscript

They are listed in that order. I am useing 98se. I am trying to find and download these files.

    msgsrv32
    http://nsis.sf.net/nsis_error
    flash9g.ocx
    psapi.dll
    kernel32.dll
    jscript.dll
    run-time error 53
    plugin.ocx

every time I had a problem or error message I wrote down the name of the file in question. Would it be asking to much to have you tell me which (once I have found and downloaded them) file I should use to open them with?
    Thank you for your help!

    Welcome to WindowsBBS;)

You probably don't need to open any of those files.....

It'd be better to tell us what the real probelm is...Like the exact verbage of the error message you're getting..

Are you getting an error like the file is missing or corrupt?
When are you getting the error...What application are you using when you get the error?

I get them usually when I'm on the net going from one web site to the other. They usually say something like: Explorer has incounterd a problem and needs to close. At any rate just for future reference I would like to know what I am supposed to do when that box pops up asking me to make a choice. I have no idea what any of those programs do. And if I have a problem with a file shouldn't I try and replace it with a good file? Thanks for your help!

P.S. If I married two midgets,
Would that be big of me? LOL

Are you sure you are having problems with those files? Those you listed shouldn't be opened by a user, they are support files for the OS and other software (some aren't even files).

Perhaps if you try again to explain your problem we can try to help.

I wouls also suggest to check for Malware; I rather suspect you might be infected:

Please read this post, then post the requested log(s) in the Malware and Virus Removal forum.

Ok, lets say I'm on the web surfing along, I got the wind in my hair, I'm hanging 10 and looking good! Then from out of no where a box pops up. One time it might say THIS PROGRAM HAS PERFORMED AN ILLEGAL ACTION AND WILL BE CLOSED DOWN or something to that effect. The next time maybe its a different box but say something like IE has encountered a problem and needs to close, either way both boxes will have a detail button in it. I always click on it to see which file I am having a problem with. I then goggle it and try to down load it. If you do that it replaces the bad file? Doesn't it? When the file is down loaded I click the open button and the file does what it does. But sometimes when I click open a box pops up asking me to choose which program I would like to open the file with. Thus the problem in which I have stated! Arie has recommended that I run a tool and post the log from it on the malware thread, so I'm going to try it.

Ok, Arie I down loaded the file from the mirror site. I clicked the open button and a cmd box poped up that said:

Cannot find the file 'cmd' (or one of its componets). Make sure the path and filename are correct and that all required libraries are available.

I have no idea what that means! What do I do?

The message "THIS PROGRAM HAS PERFORMED AN ILLEGAL ACTION AND WILL BE CLOSED DOWN" means that a program has tried to write to memory already in use by another program. I have noticed that when a file is pointed to, the cause of this file going wrong was caused by some other program that file is also threaded to.
Plugin.Ocx is a application helper, in this case it is meant to run Netscape plugins as an ActiveX control (or known as Browser Helper Objects). Not running Netscape as a browser? Doesn't matter as the file is there anyway.
You're running a 98 system, you have a command prompt instead. If you used the DDS you will get that message as it is trying to run a command prompt emulator (Cmd.Exe) that does not exist on your system. What you need to use instead is HiJackThis, amd post it's log.

I really think you have a case of versionitis, and should run a repair of Internet Explorer, and run a check for corrupted files.

To run the repair, go to Control Panel, select Add/Remove Programs.
Double click the Internet Explorer 6 entry, you'll get a small window appear, select to Repair Internet Explorer. You will be prompted to reboot when it is done.

    To check for corrupted files.
Go to Start\Run, type in SFC and press Enter.
You'll have the System File Checker appear, run the scan leaving the current options selected.
There is one file that may show up as corrupted, SetupX.Dll, a DirectX file that is updated, you can choose to ignore this one.

Hi markp62, I ran sfc and the only file I found was setup.dll and ignored it.

I ran repair on IE but found two things on it in add/remove programs, they are: 1) internet explorer Q918439
    2) microsoft internet explorer 6 and internet tools

Does that sound right to you? Also I down loaded hijack this so I'm going to try and post it in the malware and virus thread. Thank you so much for your help! Your ok! No, I mean it! I don't care what the others say! LOL:)

After you run the scan, and it appears in Notepad then put the mouse just to the left of the first line of the text in Notepad. Left click and hold, then move the mouse all the way to the right. When done correctly the text will highlight. After you are all the way to the right, then go down to the end.
Let go of the left mouse button when you are past the text, else it will come undone. Then either right click on the highlighted text and select Copy or go to the toolbar and select Edit, then choose Copy.

I really don't know how you meant that but from this side it didn't sound friendly (even with the LOL's).

Anyway if you run HiJackthis and select "Do a system scan and save a log file" it'll automatically open notepad with your log. From there cut 'n' paste.

It has come to my attention that there are a few of you out there that seem to think that my last post to markp62 was some sort of a attempt to insult him! Nothing could be further from the truth! If you have been following my thread and have the ability to stay focused on the subject and object you will clearly be able to see that no offense was meant or given! I thought my comment was short, straight to the point and funny! I clearly see now that any attempt at humor or any other human emotion around here is a sin. The whole place reeks of antiseptic if you ask me. It reminds me of when I was a kid and had to live with my filthy rich grandparent. There, when your bed was made in the morning you didn't even dare to sit back down on it, let along make a mess any where in the house. The whole place looked unlived in! I'm afraid I can't live like that so perhaps my days are numbered here! For me it is better to have lived and laughed than not to have lived at all.

I would like to apologize to markp62 just in case he's not as cool as I think he is and has taken offense to what I said! I'll even go as far as to apologize to any thin skinned, anal retentive computer geeks that came along and were frightened by my rough and manly words! Wipe your tears and change your paints, it will be OK! In the future, if there is a future, I shall watch what I say! Have a nice day and try to remember I am just a clown at heart and I love everybody!

I see what the problem is. Hijackthis doesn't open my wordpad, it opens some other thing called IMAGING which says its not a valid app and shows nothing. How do I change it so my wordpad opens hijackthis?

No offense taken. I misunderstood the question, or my bad.
Well anyway, it seems that LOG file types are associated with Imaging (the Kodak thing that came with Win98). Open a Windows Explorer window, (My Documents will work) go to the toolbar at View, select Folder Options, then click on the File Types tab, scroll down until you see LOG file, and double click it. Another window should open, look down and you will "open ", double click it. A smaller window will open, you will see the heading "Application to perform action ", change the text below it to exactly as I have it in bold.
    C:\WINDOWS\NOTEPAD.EXE "%1 "
Then click on OK to approve.
While you may want to have Wordpad associated, I am going with default settings, if the file is too big (not likely), as normal you should be prompted to open the file with WordPad instead.
