I run scandisk regularly however For the couple months when I run it everything cleans up except compress old files. I can't find anything in the facts on this issue. Is there something wrong or am I paranoid. My computer is running slower than desired but there does not seem to be any other issue. What should I do.

If you are running the Disk Cleanup Utility, that option you see "compress old file" is not to delete but to compress old files which have not been used in a while. If you want to free up space, unistall old programs no longer used and/or backup old saved files to CD or DVD or some other media.

Hope this is helpful. You can also refer to this link for more information on the disk cleanup utility.

I don't recommend compressing old files for machines that have marginal speed and memory. It tends to degrade performance.

If you have such a machine and you have chosen to compress them, consider uncompressing them to see the difference.

Thank you for your response Mitch.

I know it doesn't delete files. I guess what I am wondering is: If the files don't compress to save disk space will this be an issue for me to deal with in the future or an issue that I can fix now. Or is this an issue at all. There is so much I have yet to learn about this wonderful machine.

If you have opted to compress the older files any time in the past, you will notice several files colored blue in Explorer. Those are the compressed files. I don't recommend compressing files unless you are severely short of drive space and have no other alternative.

If you want to decompress them to possibly improve the performance of your computer, open My Computer and right-click the C: drive icon. Select Properties. Uncheck Compress contents to save disk space, and click OK. It will likely take several minutes to complete so be patient.

You can leave it like it is if you want. It won't cause you any problems other than the speed sacrifice.

Now I know that it is not something to worry about. I appreciate you taking the time out to help with this non issue. :)

Depending on your recipes tomatoes can be quite nice in a fruit salad.:p

I must amend the advice given above to be more specific to your special circumstances. The procedure I gave for decompressing the files applies only if you have previously chosen to compress the ENTIRE drive.

In your case, you may have chosen to only compress files that were beyond a certain age. To decompress those files, you must open My Computer and click on the drive that contains the files so that the folders and files are shown in the right side pane. The click EDIT on the toolbar and choose "Select All." Then click FILE > Properties > ADVANCED > and untag all boxes shown. Then OK (about three OK's) out of there and wait until the system finishes changing the file attributes.
