I don't know if you can help with this - I googled it extensively and nothing came up.

For the last 3 days anytime ANYONE (auto generated emails and regular emails) sends email to my gmail, it auto-generates this auto-reply:

    ---------------------

    hi:
Heya, how are you doing recently ?
I would like to introduce you a very good company which I knew. Their company homepage is www.vanigo.com. They can offer you all kinds of electronical products which you need, such as motorcycles, laptops, mobile phones, digial cameras, TV LCD,xbox, ps3, gps, MP3/4, etc.
Please take some time to have a look at it, there must be something you 'd like to purchase.
    Their contact E-mail: vanigo@188.com
    MSN : vanigo@live.cn
Hope you have a good mood in shopping from their company!
    Regards.

I don't use any mail apps for gmail (not outlook, OE, Thunderbird, nothing!!), I just use it on the web. Even at that - I don't really use the email for anything other that for signing up for online forums or to get notifies for facebook or ebills. I don't actually use it to send/receive personal email so I don't check it that often. To tell you the truth, I don't think I even logged into it all last week. I actually just check the list of incoming items on my google home page using the gmail app/rss feed. If something I need to read comes in - I log in then.

I got a little concerned today when I emailed myself some text from work email to home email (instructions for something) and got the autoreply.

I checked my send items and there are 100s of auto-sent emails. I checked the auto-reply settings and there are no messages there so I don't know where these messages are coming from.

Any ideas?? I'm getting a little concerned!!

Can't post RSIT at the moment as my main PC that I used to use up until Christmas is currently disconnected (don't know if that makes a diff because I've only accessed gmail from it and my new Mac both via web interface).

    **ETA -
I just got a Macbook a few days ago as well - apparently my email in the Mail app on it was configured and I may have used it, but I don't recall opening any emails and while Macs aren't 100% perfect at virus protection, they are less problemsome. I don't think it's the Mac though...wouldn't make sense since I didn't open any emails. I just opened the app to check it out, entered my gmail info and left it running in the background. I may have looked at the list of emails, but didn't click on any that I recall and then closed it. ?? I know you can't help with Mac (already have a thread asking about it on their forums) but maybe someone has seen something like this before? Can gmail be infected on their end???

Hahah. It was bugging me so much as soon as I just got home I logged into gmail and looked EVERYWHERE at all the settings. Turns out it WAS a virus in Gmail online, not on any of my computers. Somehow one of the emails in there (don't ask me how??) turned on my "vacation" settings and an autoreply with the spam message. I know for a fact that I did not do that nor did I access any emails or anything that could have done that.

Now I have to contact Gmail and let them know...in case it's some vunerability they need to look at.

Now we have to worry about our email providers too. Is there any end to this non sense ?

Is it possible your account had been hacked and someone else (not a virus) changed the settings? IMHO that's a more likely scenario.

If I were you I'd change your password to be safe, but agree there's nothing wrong with contacting Gmail just in case.

Oh don't worry, I changed the password before I even figured out what it was just in case. And I let Google know so they can investigate.

I too got hit but not on gmail but hotmail.

Seems its a new kind of worm/vulnerability and is not limited to one provider.

What did you get hit with? How could you tell? I use gmail all the time but my mail goes through Mailwasher so I rarely go into my gmail acct...I do go in usually 2 or 3 times a month to clean out the "SPAM ".

Exact same thing as first post. Exact wordings in auto reply. And to top it, the joker sent it to all the contacts in my Hotmail address book.

me too. my friend who got the spam from my acct knew it was spam, and warned me right away.. at first he thought it was an Outlook virus, but when i researched vanigo, I got to this site, and a few others, where it was discussed. I changed my pswd, and also, now only log onto gmail in secure mode. It monkeyed with my settings, put me in vacation mode, and copied that spam msg into the vacation response, and then sent it to everybody i had contacted that day.. its a real pain. I had to write followup emails to the people explaining i was 'hijacked', etc.. I wish they could find and prosecute these people in the same way they would if they messed with the US Mail.

    Vanigo Worm Continued

    Hi Everyone,

I just submitted a post about this Vanigo Worm. But upon check my email, I received another email that failed to deliver the email from Vanigo. Not only does it hijack email, but it must scan web sites that you use, because I received a Failure Notice from MAILER-DAEMON@yahoo.com for email I supposedly sent to TeacherTube, a web site that I occasionally use to upload video related to teaching, but I've never emailed them.

    More on Vanigo Worm

I hope I am not overposting about this Vanigo Worm problem, but I'm a Teacher/Tech at work and I had two tabs open, one from my Hotmail account and one from my Yahoo account (my default email and the one that got invaded/infected. I sent a test message from Yahoo to myself at Yahoo and another test message almost simultaneously from my Hotmail to myself at Yahoo. The Hotmail got there immediately, but the message from my Yahoo email to myself at Yahoo still hasn't made it. Kind of like something intercepts the email first. I know my computer insn't infected because I have Deep Freeze on our computers in my Lab (locks down the drives) and I rebooted before running the test. I'm going to call Yahoo.

Arie, the link says its a problem with gmail & not with your computer.

I believe, Hotmail is/was also facing such a problem as I had indicated earlier. God knows when this would stop.
