...also, can I use a "Windows XP Professional" CD to do a "Restore" of an installation of "Windows XP Home "?

PS These are both Dell computers (ie the Windows XP Professional CD is from Dell, for a Dell desktop, and she has a Dell notebook). By the way, I am really glad Dell was able to put about .40 cents in it's pocket by not including a Windows CD with the notebook....

Yes you can only thing is that if you use the professional one when you update your going to get the authentic is fake pirated bull, with that cd you can boot but the bartpe you can make a boot disk & make the reinstall out of the link info I gave you. In my way you wont have the M$ nag bull that plagues windows.

You do not own a professional copy for that machine, well good luck if you do.
I fixed many computers with the link process & bartpe & it doesnt matter if the disk is home or professional from what I remember.;)

Well!!!!! I let Chkdsk /r run again....took about another hour. I tried starting up from thd HD again... same error. I then rebooted off the Windows XP Professional CD again and was in looking at the screens to do an "Install "......I was at the final screen I think before it would start the new install, just seeing what my options would be....I then decided to go back and try the "R" restore option as outlined on the web page Pete provide in post #5 in this thread....I guess Windows has to reboot from the point I was at when I quit the "Install ".....well, guess what? Windows booted off the hard drive and showed the two user accounts just like it did a week ago and as if there was never a problem!!! :D

Great news....made Jackie real happy :)

BUT this thing is still horrendously slow.....it still take like two minuets from the time you launch Explorer until the Yahoo default page displays. What to you guys think of this program:
    http://windowshelp.net/windows-xp-help/?s=g

Any other suggestions? I saw somewhere where someone suggested running chkdsk monthly. Good idea?

    Thanks,
    Jeff

Oh god no reg cleaner like that, how about ccleaner.com
I would install that run the hd analyze first to see what it wants to clean & if you feel good then do the task on the r/side, after that look in the l/s choose tools & start up to see what is loading there you can disable & reboot to see the results..:D

Hey Jeff. Glad you got the computer back up and running. :) The program that you linked to is called Regcure. That is a major no no and that program is a complete scam. You will be wasting your money on that program and chances are it will mess up your registry and cause your computer to become unbootable. I doubt you would want to recover your system a second time. Read this article for more information about why you shouldn't use registry cleaners, Why I don't use registry cleaners.

As for making the computer faster, follow these steps here:

    1. Click Start< Control Panel< Add/Remove Programs and uninstall any programs that you dont use
    2. While in the add/remove programs window click the button that says add/remove windows components and uncheck the checkboxes next to Indexing Service, MSN Explorer, Windows Messenger and click ok when you are done.
    3. Click Start< Run and type services.msc and press ok. The Services window will open. Highlight the following services, click properties and under startup type click disabled and hit ok. Do this ONLY for each service that I list below:
    Distributed Link Tracking Client
    Distributed Transaction Coordinator
Health Key and Certificate Management Service
    Indexing Service
    Net Logon
    NetMeeting Remote Desktop Sharing
    QoS RSVP
    Remote Desktop Help Session Manager
    Remote Registry
    Smart Card
    Telnet
Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service
    WMI Performance Adapter

    4. Download and run ATF Cleaner and select all the checkboxes in the program then hit the empty selected button, http://majorgeeks.com/ATF_Cleaner_d4949.html
    5. Run Disk Cleanup, Start< All Programs< Accessories< Sytstem Tools< Disk Cleanup. When its done calculating how much free space you can save make sure you check all the checkboxes except for compress old files.
    6. Click Start< Right Click My Computer and click Properties. Click the advanced tab< Under performance hit settings< click advanced again and under virtual memory click change< Make sure your harddrive is selected and select the option that says system managed size and click the set button. Now Click ok on all the windows to close them out and reboot the computer.
    7. Make sure you have all the latest Windows Updates installed including Windows XP Service Pack 3, Internet Explorer 7 and Windows Media Player 11.

Note: In step number 3, before you disable any windows service could you let me know if you do any file, media, or printer sharing? Is the computer used in a work environment? If you use file/media sharing and the computer is used in a work environment and not connected to a home network then do NOT disable those services. If you use the computer only at home and don't use file sharing then you can safely disable those services.

Ok, here is what I did.
    1. Bought a copy of RegCure (before you posted) and ran that. It supposedly found and fixed 1161 "errors ". It did not speed up anything. I already asked for a refund (I have 60 days).
    2. Tried your three steps above.....
    3. Downloaded ATF Cleaner....but this is a $30 program also? I did not buy it yet.
    4. I just realized I did not do step 6 above yet.....will do that later....
    5. I defraged the hard drive

The machine seems to boot slightly faster but it still takes a very long time to get an Explorer window open from the tine you launch it.

I did notice she is having trouble when she shuts down or restarts. We keep getting an error that "sprtcmd.exe" wont end. We have to manually quit this program. It appears to be a Dell support file. If I do a search on the hard drive it reveals two files: "sprtcmd" and "sprtcmd.exe-19C0DA25 ". The latter is located in Windows/Prefetch. The odd thing is this file (and most others on this folder) appear to be Stuffit Expander files! How can that be? How can they be compressed files? Is this folder used by Windows??

PS When I first start up the machine I notice a program running in the task bar, no name but the icon looks like a Stuffit icon.....wonder if this is the cause of the slowdown at startup? Maybe trying to open ( "run ") that sprtcmd.exe program?

ATF Cleaner is a free program. You don't have to pay for it. Did you disable the windows services yet? Does your computer have file sharing enabled?

Also to improve your shut down speed read this, Improve Windows shut down speed.

One last thing, to have windows automatically end not responding programs read this End non responsive programs.

Dell Inspiron fixable? IAPro.exe the problem?

    Hi Guys,

My girlfriend has a Dell Inspiron 2200 notebook. A while back I posted this thread to try and fix it.

This is an update on the above thread. I did get the Dell working, although it was still really slow. And a couple months later it had problems again, and she just quit using it. I am just trying to fix it again so we can bring it in our RV on a trip this weekend. So I just tried to power it up and see what happens. It powers up and loads Windows. Then gets REAL slow, and I eventally get a message about "IAPro.exe" is having trouble running and do I want to send a report to MicroSoft. I did that but it keeps popping up. Anyway, it appears IAPro.exe is a malware, but bye the time I get the Seach window open to locate it so I can remove it (which takes probably over a minuet) the computer just shuts down and I get a black screen. I can't even keep the computer running to try and fix it.

Any suggestions? I would like to have internet access in our RV, and the WiFi card in the really old PowerBook I have is not compatible with JoikuSpot running on my Nokia E71x (which turns my cell phone into a WiFi hot spot)....

    Thank you,
    Jeff

Jeff, once the computer is declared clean by a Malware Expert it should hopefully be running normally. I would say the the cause of most of the problems that the computer has been experiencing could be due to multiple malware infections.

I am starting to think I have a hardware problem, where after the Insprion 2200 runs for more than 20 min. it is overheating and shutting down. I found some info on this on the net, it may be full of dust too, or the solder joint may have 'cracked' so every time you move the machine a little it shuts down, the fan may be broke (I don't think I hear one)...and if malware is running up the CPU cycles so it runs hot that just compounds the problems. This seems to be some of the common problems with these Dells from what I see on the net.....so.....the problem is after the computer has been on for a few minuets I cant even keep it running to work on it to remove the malware. It takes like 2 min. to even open Explorer or Safari. I probably need to start by getting inside the case and make sure all the dust is blown out and all connections are good....

We are going away Sat. morning so I am not sure I will have the time to really get into this, or will be successful in fixing it. So as a backup plan I found a 802.11g wifi PCMCIA card on ebay I can put in my 8 year old PowerBook that I am fairly confident will work with this old PowerBook (better than the old wifi card in there now) and my Nokia E71x cell phone. $9.99 & Free shipping, but I paid $20 for 2 day FedEx.

The old PowerBook has one broke hinge, so I will need to be careful moving it around hehe

I have been saving for a new notebook, just wasn't quite ready to buy yet :(

    Thanks,
    Jeff
