Hi everyone, seems I'm having problems yet again with my pc (from my previous thread). This time it's Windows Update not working when I click it from the Start Menu. This obviously links to it by opening IE (mine is running 6 atm) but every time I do this, it states that "The page cannot be displayed ". What's funny is that I can use said IE to browse the internet still. So I was wondering if Microsoft is experiencing issues right now with Update, or is it my darn pc again? Also, when I reboot or do a cold boot, Automatic Updates (or any "Updates" setting) is always off when Windows starts up initially. Don't bother asking for System Restore either, as ALL of my restore points have somehow disappeared!

I even had to uninstall Comodo firewall because it kept telling me that there was no network connection present. I then uninstalled and then re-installed my network adaptor to see if that would fix it. It didn't. All this just when I decided to update SP2 to have it up to date with all the patches and security updates, mainly because of all the horror stories I've read about SP3. Any help would be greatly appreciated, short of a sledgehammer to my pc! Argh.....

Hi Devil Z. :) Try this:

    1. Download Dial a Fix from here, http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4899.html.
    2. Extract the contents inside the zipped folder and run dial a fix.
    3. Shut down all backround programs that are running in the system tray.
    4. When dial a fix opens remove any restrictive policies if dial a fix finds any.
    5. Check the boxes next to Windows Update, hit Go and let dial a fix run.
    6. Next click the hammer head button which will launch dial a fixes advanced tools.
    7. Highlight the option that says Reinstall BITS, hit Go and let dial a fix run again.
    8. Close Dial a Fix
    9. Download and run WinSock Fix from here, http://www.snapfiles.com/get/winsockxpfix.html. This will reset your internet connection in case its been damaged.
    10. Finally download and run ATF Cleaner from here, http://majorgeeks.com/ATF_Cleaner_d4949.html. When you open the program make sure all the checkboxes are checked and then hit the empty selected button.
    11. Reboot the computer.

After the computer reboots, shut down all other backround programs that are running in the system tray in the taskbar. Now try and access Windows Update.

Wow, that's alot! I'll have to give it a shot though, because I was just thinking of removing SP2 and then installing again. Hopefully all this didn't happen because I simply browsed the internet (nothing out of the ordinary) with only Comodo's firewall running and no anti-virus yet. The only other program I have installed is Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, the free version.

Alright, ran all the programs you stated in that order, but now am confused. The little Windows Update icon in the quick launch bar at the bottom right came up as soon as finished running Dial a Fix the first time, before reinstalling BITS. But I just proceeded with your instructions. Should have I just started installing the updates right then? I still can't log onto the Windows Update website at all either. I'm thinking it might be my ISP (I'm with Mediacom cable internet) at this point, so I'm probably going to have to give them a talking-to. Guess I'll run Dial a Fix again....

Oh yeah, one more thing, after rebooting my computer - Windows Update is still turned off when Windows starts . I am thinking about removing and then reinstalling SP2 if all this keeps up. I'm going to stay away from Comodo's firewall for now as well. Not saying that did it, but I'm covering all my bases. If I were to reinstall SP2, when it asks me where to put the backup folder, can I just put it into my 2nd partition (D: drive) with no problems?

Tried that HostsXpert program. Ran it and still is not allowing me download any updates. I already contacted my ISP and they told me they cannot block any websites on their end. BTW, I have both SP2 and SP3 downloaded to a flash drive. I think I'm going to try installing SP3 altogether if this keeps up. The little icon at the bottom is stuck at 0% for the longest time. I also found out that I cannot browse onto any anti-virus websites either (i.e. BitDefender). Very weird. Where's my sledgehammer.....

That's a sure sign of Malware infection!

Read this post, then post the requested log(s) in the Malware and Virus Removal forum.

Sorry for the belated post! I just went ahead and uninstalled SP2 (sorry Evan) and that brought back my Windows Update feature. I then downloaded SP2 from there and straight to SP3 after that with (so far) no problems. Outside of a hanging " Windows is shutting down" screen when I turn it off, most things seem to be ok. Thanks Evan and Admin. for the help, the malware section will be on my next things to research.
