For your next computer upgrade, would you consider replacing your desktop with a laptop?

Stuck between yes and already have done.

Most of the time I use the laptop now but the desktop is more powerful and beneficial/required for certain activities.

For an upgrade to a new system then the answer would be yes, the only issue I have is repairs/upgrades it's a lot easier to repair a desktop than a laptop :(

I've voted yes in the poll because the laptop hasn't quite replaced the desktop.

Having already purchased a laptop there is no way I'd go back to using a desktop. The increased productivity (I can type in notes directly wherever I am instead of writing them out and then typing them up later on) alone has already more than paid for the price-- $600 a year and a half ago. If it broke tomorrow it would have still been the bargain of the century.

In 2-3 years (as long as I can hold out) I'll give this to a relative and get another one.

Definitely not - laptops are not suitable for serious digital imaging :) But I have an HP Business laptop used mainly for Photoshop demos and an Eee PC for travelling abroad.

Yes and have mostly done so...I purchased a Dell XPS M1710 with Vista Ultimate last year and use it about 75 - 80% of the time. I still use my home built PC for the rest as it's hard to get away from it but I'm working on it. My Laptop comes with dual video connectors off the back (1-DVI and 1-Analog) but I have not set them up yet...still using the 17" LCD from the Laptop.

I replaced an old desktop with a laptop and haven't looked back. We now have two laptops/notebooks and have not regretted the change. My wife uses one for her work as a free-lance writer and I use the other primarily to digitize all my vinyl LPs to CD. It works like a charm!

Plus the added benefit of using it on the road is great.

I see no reason for us to use desktop computers anymore (in our scenario).

Only if price was not a factor. It'd have to be an awful fancy big laptop. ;)

I spend too much time on the computer at home. If I bought a laptop I'd never get any honeydo's done.

Perhaps I'm a little old-fashioned but "replace? " - no, I don't see it for my tastes. I do have a laptop that is used primarily when traveling but I still prefer sitting down in my office and enjoying a host of different toys that perform a multitude of tasks. I don't see this changing anytime soon re: my own situation.

I own both a laptop and a desktop. But replace the desktop with a laptop, NO Way. I do too many things (video processing for example) that requires very fast and powerful processors.

Most certainly! I was about to, but having experienced the beta of Windows 7 I'll likely wait till it's available on new laptops rather than purchase a laptop with Vista then pay for an upgrade to W7 in 6 months or so.

I see no advantage in a desktop any more. I don't game. Even that is becoming a lame excuse for 99% of games. I also have no need for high end video processing that requires more than a reasonably well spec'd laptop will deliver.

I wouldn't replace my desktop with a labtop. The only reason I like labtops is that they are compact and are mobile unlike desktops. Everything else about them I don't really like. Most of the labtops that I have worked with don't have very powerful graphics cards and 9/10 they are integrated so you are stuck with them. Also its harder to access the hardware in a labtop due to how small it is and how you need certain tools to take them apart which can also be a real hassle. In my past experiences I just find that labtops are a bit more unstable the desktop PC's are.

Absolutely not!

I use my IBM/Lenovo T43, with 250GB hard drive, when traveling, and keep it synched with my desktop when at home.

The 14.1" 1024x768 screen is the perfect size for an on-the-go laptop, but I really like the 19" 1280x1024 display on my desktop's monitor for day-to-day work, be it graphics work or just browsing the internet. The desktop, despite its age, more than meets my requirements.

Besides, I like puttering with my desktop's innards, and have upgraded most of them since having the beast built to my specs seven years ago. That's not really possible with the laptop, though I have doubled the RAM and upgraded the hard drive several times.

A laptop would die if I used it. Why? because the programs and power I need can only be provided by a desktop.

I don't move around anywhere either, so the desktop is a perfect option for me.

Laptops can be slow
Expensive
Difficult if not very expensive so fix , and even take apart and diagnose
You are stuck with proprietary parts and their eras
If there are problems its not as if you can slap in a simple PCI card or a video card
I was asking one of the experienced salesman at my local best buy how many of the people with that look in their eyes that buy laptops use them as furniture and a status symbol in their homes
His answer - 80 to 90 %
I asked what of the statement that a person who does not buy a laptop as a first computer now that they have come down greatly in price is making a foolish choice was that it did not take those people very long until they came back to purchase a desktop computer as well
I just finished replacing a screen on a favorite laptop - what a long expensive process

my desktop's laptop counterpart would be worth US$4,000 where it's only US$380 something. see my PC specs on the left.

If I want to go cheap and still have the best of the best, I'll go for desktop.

We have 3 laptop and a desktop. we only use laptop for mobility and not replacement.

So, I'll go with no

My desktop case has had three different motherboards. Still looks the same as it did in 1999, but it sure does go a lot faster :D

replace desktop - yeah!

I had a desktop and swopped it for a laptop. i have never looked back. i have 2 laptops and although one is for carting around with me, the other one is hooked up at home with a big screen, keyboard and mouse as if its a desktop and the space its saving is amazing. i have never regretted it. i do realise its easier to ad and remove stuff from a desktop but if you spend well and buy a decent one right from the start, you should not need to do anything.....for a while at least. The next move will be to buy a mac notebook purely to play on as i have to advise customers how to set up dial up and bb and their emails on macs and they are becomming very popular - its just nice to be able to know what the cust see other than just looking at outdated screenshots.
