    1. Anybody still using Sygate? Is this firewall still effective in today's online environment?

    2. What about the Comodo firewall and AV in one? Any firsthand feedback?

**I've tried Comodo firewall before, i kinda' like it except for the annoying pop-ups.

Yes, m using zone alarm right now but i can't update it to version 8 because it only runs on XPSP3, mine is SP2.

Perhaps installing SP3 is your solution, in saying that though I've never been a fan of Zonealarm. Isn't it the case with Comodo though that the popups will reduce once you've taught it what's ok and what's not?

the training mode will not bug you with pop-ups but you can't stay on this mode for too long and in time it gets annoying... i've been using it for over a year... I hope they can remedy this problem because I believe it is really a very good firewall... if you have the patience.

Have you tried Kerio PF 2.1.5 scroll down.

It's old now and I wouldn't recommend it as the only protection but if you're behind a router it's still effective and has a small footprint.

I am currently using the Comodo Internet Security setup with the AV/Firewall combination. Doesn't have as many nags unless you try to install something while it is running. Simple to turn off, install your program, then restart. AV updates itself before every scan. Good package that I can live with.

Chrys03, I used Sygate on my XP machine for a long time. I liked it and was devastated when I switched to Vista and Sygate wouldn't work. I never had any problems with it; but I was behind a router as well.

I'm still using Sygate on my desktop running WinXP SP2. It seems to me that it still gives me plenty of protection. Unlike anti-virus and anti-malware software, a firewall doesn't really need to be continually fed new definitions. Sygate has blocked bad guys from getting in, and it warns me when any program tries to phone home (or wherever) unless/until I've told it that that program is OK. Over the years I have found it reliable and pretty easy to use, so I've been in no hurry to change. After reading Scot Finnie's assessment in his newsletter, I gave some thought to the paid version of Online Armor, but I just haven't found a compelling reason to switch. (I should add that I'm also behind a router, so that too helps.)

I've used various firewalls over the years but have settled on Comodo Firewall. I've used the following...
    - Zone Alarm
    - NIS
    - Sygate
    - Webroot
    - Kerio
    - then finally Comodo

I'm also behind a router...I'm using Comodo to see what's trying to "phone home "...
