Greetings; I'm new to this forum, but need help and am in hopes that some of you can be of assistance.
First off, I'm the proud owner of a new computer built by 3BTech (anybody know about them??), but am finding that it came with no instructions and I'm not very knowledgeable in this field.

Okay..I bought a photo software program (Corel Paint Shop Pro: PHOTO X2), mainly for touching up photos, resizing them, cropping, and writing on the photo, and so forth, but this software seems to have 'taken over' my computer. I plug my card reader into the USB port (card reader port does NOT work), and used to be (on my old computer) a menu opened up asking me what I wanted to do with these photos (view, copy, save, email, etc). But, now with this Photo2 installed, I have no idea what it's doing with my pictures; appears that it's downloading them into it's own site. What scares is that I plugged in an external drive, that had loads of photos on it, and upon plugging it in, Photo2 starts running the hard drive and (I assume) copying all of the pictures off of it. I unplugged the hard drive, because it was starting to get hot and the red light was starting to flash. It cooler, once disconnected, but now I'm afraid to plug it back in, for fear of what this applicance (Photo2) will do.

My question is, should I uninstall this software? But I've invested dollars into this product and like the sounds of what it offers...as far as a photo lab goes, so how do I keep it and use it, for just that?
Next question is, how do I make Internet Explorer or whatever my default card reader..or even for viewing cds, DVDs?? Cause the same thing happened when I put in a cd; it (the Photo2) started copying the pictures that was on the cd and all I wanted to do was look at them, but it did not give me that choice.

    Help, Please!
    Barbara

I am failry familiar with Corel products, however I am not familiar with Photo X2, but it seems to me it just needs the options adjusted. Under the File, Edit, or View menus, there should be a selection for Options. Find the option that tells it to automatically download photos and uncheck it. There may be a selection for which drives it accesses; unselect all drives/devices except C: or D: whichever it is loaded on.

Hopefully there is at least one other user here with Corel Photo X2 who can give you some better insight. I just wanted to get you started.

By the way, this should have been posted in Other Software. But not to worry, one of the moderators will move it for you.

    Mitch...
Thanks for your reply. Sorry about posting to the wrong area, do I need to repost under a different subject?

I went to File, Edit, View and saw no options, saw a customize under View, I think. But nothing in there about downloading photos automatically. Darn, this is about to get me down; don't know much anyway and this is just going to prove it!!

    Thanks.

No, you don't need to repost. It will be moved automatically. Somewhere on that menu bar there will be some kind of setup option. I think what you may need to do is turn off cataloguing. You may need to go to help, select index, and in the dialogue box type cataloguing; it may give you the instructions to turn if off.

I am totally unfamiliar with PaintShop Pro - a powerful image editing program BTW, as I am a long term user of Photoshop. However I agree with Mitch - the software is probably cataloguing and caching thumbnails of all your image files for quick recall when required. I would not think for one moment that it is copying your files anywhere, just details of location and creating thumbnails. You should be able to check on this by looking at the content of the external drive.

Your external drive will get warm when working as opposed to sitting idle - the flashing red light, if not a power indicator, indicates the drive is reading/writing.

Sometimes programs do 'take over' certain computer functions - it seems to me that Corel has over ridden the default autoplay settings ....

Put a CF/SD card or whatever into the card reader and plug it into a USB port. In Windows Explorer it will be seen as a hard drive. Right click on it > Properties > Autoplay tab and select your desired options.

If changing these settings has no effect it may be that Corel has turned off autoplay on the drives. Check this out by downloading Tweak UI from MS ....

Expand the My Computer branch, then the AutoPlay branch, and then select Drives.

Turn on the checkbox next to each drive letter for which you want AutoPlay to run if they are not already checked.

I think both the options you need are under File > Preferences > General Program Prefs

In the left sidebar, select Organizer, then "Uncatalogged folders" and browse to your external HD. That will tell the catalogger to stop checking it for photo files to save in its database (for some reason, on some computers this causes problems like you describe).

Then select Photo Downloader in the sidebar, and click the top checkbox (this stops the Corel Downloader from starting when you start your PC).

I think those should solve your problems.

Big Thanks to each of you...haven't checked anything yet, but will.
Also, thanks for moving my letter to where it belongs; sorry about that.

One other thing, this edition of Windows XP does NOT have Windows Picture and Fax Viewer on it; is there someplace that I can download it from or do I need to purchase the software for this?
Another thing, I do know that hard drives have a flashing light when working, but this was more than that...it was a BRIGHT red, with blue surrounding it and flashing at a very high rate; this was not normal. And it wasn't just warm, it was HOT, so unplugging it was the correct thing to do. Now, I don't want to plug it back in, as long as this Photo2 program is still on my computer. Should I uninstall Corel Paint ShopPro: PHOTO2 until I get things squared away?

And one last (for now, hehehe) question; does anyone know of, have experience with 3BTech? Just curious.

    Thanks,
    Barbara

Without knowing the make/model of the drive I would still suggest that the lights are an indication of the drive working - in this case being catalogued and this process would be continuous - hence a high rate of flashing and heat generation - looks like the cooling is not very effective.

Check out the settings suggested by dmeisner and then write to the drive and observe the flashing lights - my guess is that the pattern will be the same, but only as the drive writes.
Windows Picture & Fax Viewer is not an application which can be directly initiated - hence there is no listing in Programs....

In Windows Explorer > Tools > Folder Options > File Types scroll down to jpg or jpeg, highlight it - what does it state under 'Opens with' ? If not Windows Picture & Fax Viewer hit the Change button and pick Windows Picture & Fax Viewer from the program list - do this for jpg & jpeg.

Post back with success story :)
