Just curious if anyone ease is having this problem. I'm running a laptop and two home computers (all XP home) with DSL/Lnksys router and when I click the windows update button in the start menu, IE pops up and goes to the MSN.COM website. I'm not able to automatic update either. The computers are not networked to each other.
One computer runs dual XP and Vista, and Vista even says "not able to update" or something to that effect.
    Should I worry???

    **edit**

my laptop tries to go to this URL: "http://www.update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us"

    and gets this error msg:

    Server Error in '/' Application.
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    The resource cannot be found.
Description: HTTP 404. The resource you are looking for (or one of its dependencies) could have been removed, had its name changed, or is temporarily unavailable. Please review the following URL and make sure that it is spelled correctly.

    Requested Url: /windowsupdate/v6/default.aspx

    Hope this helps...........

    maybe

By the way, you are using Microsoft Update, correct?

I am not experienced with windows update errors, but do you have any software firewalls blocking access to windows update?

Find error codes associated with the failure in the WindowsUpdate.log.

To open this log, go to Start > Run and type

    %windir%/WindowsUpdate.log

    and press OK.

    Post relevant info here.

For more information see: How to read the Windowsupdate.log file

If you are getting that error message see if running dial a fix will resolve the problem. Download it from here, http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4899.html. Run the program and when it opens select all the checkboxes under windows update and hit Go. After Dial a Fix finishes running then close it and try opening Microsoft Update again. :)

Thanks Arie, ran it, now I have to figure it out. Tried to copy and paste but am having trouble getting it to work.
Evan Omo, downloaded and ran the program. Didn't work. I'm still getting the MSN.COM webpage when I click "windows update ".

I'm using IE to try and download updates.

Should be easy. But you should not try to copy/paste the whole log (it will be too large), but just some relevant information - say the last 50 lines.

Thanks for the link Hawk22, I can't get to that update screen...

Arie, I turn off zone alarm and my anti-virus and tried the IE windows update, I still go straight to MSN.com. Since two desktop computers are wired to the router and my laptop is wireless to it (Lnksys WT54g), could it's firewall be causing the problem?

You'll have to take your time & work through the article step-by-step.

What happens when you click this link: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/v4/iuident.cab

If a file download dialog box appears, the problem is not with your Internet connection. Click Cancel. If you cannot connect to this link, and you receive a Page Cannot Be Displayed error message, your Internet connection is preventing you from reaching the Windows Update site.

Thanks Arie. Interesting, I tried that link and the URL stayed (didn't change), but all I got was a blank page (absolutely nothing), and the "done" on the bottom left. No "page cannot be displayed or anything. Would the problem still be on my side?

OK, ran that and rebooted and I still go to MSN.com when I click the windows update. Tomorrow when my son goes out with his friends, I'm going to bypass the Lnksys router and go straignt from modem to computer to see if that narrows down where the trouble is. This is strange.

I'd encourage you to follow Arie's suggestion as some of the more common rogues will block access to Windows Updates. If you get a clean bill of health after posting in the Malware Removal forum, Microsoft PCSafety is a free Microsoft support site for resolving Update problems. Call 1-866-727-2338

Bypassed my router and went straight from modem to computer. Windows update worked perfectly. I guess my router for some reason keeps redirecting me to MSN.com, now I just have to figure out why.

Thanks Arie and everyone for your help.
