I have posted several times before, and I am back again. My customer who had problem with screen saver which you can read in one of my previous posts is now having a new problem.

This seems to have started he said after some lady sent him and email to install some program, etc. Now he cannot view any types of video except for .mov it seems. .wmv, .avi. .mpg, etc. do not work at all. I think that whatever he installed caused the videos portion of XP to not work anymore.

Is there any fix for this? He already had K-Lite Codec Pack which I installed for him. Again, prior to that download no problems at all. I removed all Codecs or at least the Codec Pack, cleaned Registry and re-installed K-Lite and that did not work either. I wonder if there is some .dll file that needs to be re-registered or perhaps a registry entry that is messed up.

I would really love to fix this problem. He now knows not to download and run stuff like that without knowing what it could do.

    Thanks for any answers,

    Victor

PS He is on XP Pro SP-3. Do not recall if this was already installed prior to this happening. Forgot to ask him

A System restore to the date/time before the email would likely fix it. Is this a media player problem only?

Not Isolated to Windows Media Player

Power DVD would also not play videos. Basically, if you take out Quicktime from the equation, the whole media system/config is messed up.

This is the first time I have seen this. The system restore would help, but I did not see it go back that long. This happened like 2 months ago I think.

Any other things you can tell me? Pictures are fine although I must mention he had lost the ability to preview thumbnails but that was fixed. So it seems that whatever came in really did a number media wise whether it is photo or video. Now photos are OK from what he said just video. I never tested the music but I assume it is OK. I will have to ask him that.

    Thanks for the help..

I guess what I failed to ask was, are you getting any error messages? Can you play videos on the Internet?

Have you tried right-clicking on the video and selecting "open with "

exactly what happens when you try to play a video.

It would be nice to know if mp3s play or not.

Sorry, yes I will get more info and the error message. I will ask him to view videos on you tube and play music. Did not think about that

One of my clients had that problem, I told him to search C: for all videos--> right click any video--> "open with" and it worked just fine. Get him/her a media player that is up to date on all video extensions. I use http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ and He's hasn't had trouble since.
