This Poll is all about software and/or hardware firewalls which you may use on your computer.

This is a multi-choice poll. If you have a router, you have a hardware firewall, you may need to check if it is switched on though.

Every hour of every day, millions of IPs (Internet Addresses) are scanned for the opportunity to exploit/hack into the system. Without a firewall your computer will be violated in numerous ways, including but not limited to using your computer to send spam or viruses, deleting your files, and numerous other nasty things which also jepardize your relationship with your ISP and other net-citizens.

After you have installed your firewall, you need to test your system to insure that it is secure at any of these sites:

    https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2
    http://www.auditmypc.com/freescan/prescan.asp

Which firewall do you use and why? Our list includes software and hardware solutions. If I missed your favorite, please post and let us know with the name and URL.

The firewall that I use is the Microsoft Windows Firewall along with my Netgear hardware firewall/router. Together, they both do a great job at protecting our wireless network from malware attacks.

I'm a little surprised to have a "which is your favourite firewall" and then be unable to vote.

Favourite personal firewall: Tiny Firewall version 2. Old piece of software but still works a treat for me on XP Pro systems.

Favourite hardware firewall: I've always liked Watchguard firewalls, but I have a soft spot for our Netasq F50. It is a little quirky but works a treat.

I'm using Norton Personal fw, which is no longer available as a stand alone product.

And I refuse to ever get a suite of any kind. So I'll use this until the tell me I can't anymore and then switch to some other freeware one, in all likelyhood.

Although I recommend Comodo on here, I am in the same boat as ReggieB except I use Tiny Personal's descendant, Kerio Personal v2.1.5 .
While this older firewall can't detect DLL's, I can have a tight control of local/remote port access, IP addresses, and only occcupy 4-8 Mb of Ram.

My favorite was/is Sygate but it doesn't work with Vista. Haven't found anything I really like. I use Windows Firewall and the firewall built in to my Vonage device and my Roadrunner modem for now.

Arie, what happened to PC Tools Firewall Plus on the list?

Is there any way we can see what others voted for which people, it only shows the number?

No. Wanted to make votes more private. If people want to share they can post their choice.

    accidentally clicked ======

I use Zone Alarm Pro - this is also not listed - not part of Zone Alarm suite.

Used free Zone Alarm for a long time and then switched to paid version. Sometimes annoying to use when telling it ok web sites but otherwise has kept my PC out of trouble.

Netgear hardware & Windows firewall when on the home network, and Zone Alarm when travelling wirelessly.

The best that I have used is Online Armor which is not on the list. The easiest one for a beginner is probably Zone Alarm.

I use ZoneAlarm Pro v7 also and even tho sometimes "noisy ", it has never let me down... besides, when I installed it was amazed to see that the license was good for 51,347 days! Why, that's 140 years! I hope to get good use out of the remaining time.

Unfortunately, as dpurser mentioned, the poll fails to include Tall Emu's Online Armor Security Suite, a very good software firewall, which is available in both free and subscription versions.

I used ZoneAlarm free for years, but ran into problems with later versions of the 7.0.x release last spring, and made the switch to Online Armor at that time.

    I also use a hardware firewall, a D-Link DI-524 wired/wireless router.
