Is this cable only for data transfer or can programs and windows
    files also be transferred?

For a program with multi-folders, 1 in C:\Program files and 1 in Documents and
Settings folder - Does it transfer both folders by selecting the
folder in Programs files or do both folders need to be selected?

I ask because ads state it will transfer "programs and settings" for
    a program.....

Want to buy one but not if its just a data transfer.

    thanks,
    savagcl

It'll transfer the files but not the settings. The majority of programs and windows it's self will need reinstalling.

I belong to a Seniors PC club and we are always getting members
who want to x-fer "stuff" from XP to Vista.

Most of their PC's came from their kids as a present then they
want to upgrade their basic PC to vista.
I thought this would help speed things up some.

Might work OK for simple data/jpg/docs tho. Most of them don't
know enough to keep the program cds in a safe place or even how
    to install/remove programs.

    thanks,
    savagcl

You've got your work cut out there, probably best to take each case one at a time.

You could always post on here it you have any specific problems.

    A couple of points.

Obviously not all systems will be Vista capable or even desirable, RAM in particular, any less than 2GB then I'd stick with XP.

Make sure you know as much about the hardware as possible, they'll need Vista drivers and particulary older hardware may not (nor ever have) Vista compatible drivers.

I'm a little confused....are you transferring files from one PC to another or just upgrading the OS?

If you are transferring from one XP pc to a Vista PC then the Easy File Transfer Cable should work just fine and it will transfer files and settings.

If you are upgrading the OS, then Wildfire is correct.

It was the "transfer" in your original post that got me confused.

Are you sure about this, I'd be wary of any software or hardware that ckaims to transfer program files and settings. There's many, many ways for software to store their settings and although transferring them from one system to another is possible how much work for the user would be involved?

In that case I'll stick to my earlier statement...

Microsoft's ideas on how things should be done is not always the same as others, and even then I doubt MS would produce software that would potentially break there own lincense agreements (i.e. transfer Applications).

Not wanting to x-fer OS's by any means. Was talking about user
installed programs and their data files - quicken, word, Paint Shop
    Pro, etc).

Talking to someone, they said that Vista must be host (guiding
force) and it only works to x-fer files from previous OS's to Vista.
    Which is OK.

Compatability tho, would seem to be a small problem - drivers?

thanks for the link and info,
