Suggested that I put / link my original problem virus / malware section

    http://www.WindowsBBS.com/windows-xp/77613-boot-problem-blue-screen-suspect-virus.html
In a nutshell here is what i posted earlier

Went to boot up my laptop and got the dreaded bluesreen of death which said
A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Disable or uninstall any anti-virus, disk defragmentation or backup utilites. Check your hard drive configuration, and check for any updated drivers. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.

    Technical information:

    ***Stop: 0x00000024 (0x00190203, 0x82FAE328, 0xC0000102, 0x00000000)

It won't boot into safe mode either, or last known configuration. Keeps taking me back to the blue screen. I suspect a virus

After getting some sound advise here is my current problem

Ok booted using the Xp disc and did the chkdsk /r thing and it worked to some extent. Managed to go inot the safe mode where I did a virus scan and it detected a virus called Trojan Vundo which was removed by Norton. turned off the laptop and started it up which took much longer than normal. At a point I got a screen that said
    "checking file system on C
The type of the file is NTFS
    The volume is dirty
CHKDSK is verifing file (stage 1 of 3) complete
CHKDSK is verifing indexes (stage 2 of 3)
correcting error in index $I30 for file 3353
sorting index $I3O in file 3353
Recovering orphan file were1e~1.dir (3353) into dir 2907
    were1e5.dir00
    fixvun~1.mdm (4035) into dir 3353
    fixvun~1.exe
    fixvun~1.hdm (4037) into dir 3353
plus some others that I wasn't fast enough to write down

The computer is extremely slow loading windows.

My question would be did I have two problems independent of each other or could the virus have caused the original problem. the laptop was working Ok until a recent download.

any suggestions on what i need to do

Instructions posted for this user are customized for this user only. The tools used may cause damage if used on a computer with different infections. If you think you have similar problems, please post a HJT log and start a new topic.

    Hi and welcome

I see AVG8 Antivirus and Symantec/Norton Antivirus both on the machine. Having two will cause system clashes and instability, and the possibility of false reports with a huge waste of system resources. While this may seem like greater protection, it can cause problems including slowdowns and system hangs.
The alternative is to uninstall one AV and keep the other.

Print this topic or save to notepad, it will make it easier for you to follow the instructions and complete all of the necessary steps as we will need to close every window that is open later in the fix.

While TeaTimer is an excellent tool for the prevention of spyware, it can sometimes prevent HijackThis from fixing certain things.
Please disable TeaTimer for now until you are clean. TeaTimer can be re-activated once your HijackThis log is clean.

    # Open Spybot Search & Destroy.
    # In the Mode menu click "Advanced mode" if not already selected.
    # Choose "Yes" at the Warning prompt.
    # Expand the "Tools" menu.
    # Click "Resident ".
    # Uncheck the "Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of overall system settings)
    active." box.
    # In the File menu click "Exit" to exit Spybot Search & Destroy.

    * See this link for a tutorial http://russelltexas.com/malware/teatimer.htm

    NEXT**
Open HijackThis, Click Do a system scan only, checkmark these. Then close all other windows and browsers except HijackThis and press fix checked.

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Microsoft Windows Installer] C:\Documents and Settings\Chief\Application Data\Microsoft\dtsc\24612.exe
    O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)

Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab:
    • Under the Hidden files and folders heading:
    • Select - Show hidden files and folders.
    • Uncheck- Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
    • Also, make sure there is no checkmark beside Hide file extensions for known file types.
    • Click OK. (Remember to Hide files and folders once done)

Using Windows Explorer (right-click your "Start" button and select "Explore "), please navigate to and delete the following files/folders in bold
    C:\Documents and Settings\Chief\Application Data\Microsoft\dtsc\24612.exe <--delete this file

Next, launch Notepad, (Start > Run, type in: notepad) copy and paste next present in the quotebox below in it:
(don't forget to copy and paste REGEDIT4)
Save this as fix.reg and change the "Save as type" to "All Files" and place it on your desktop. It should look like this:
Double-click on it and when it asks you if you want to merge the contents to the registry, click "Yes" or "OK ". You should receive a message that it was successful. You may delete the file afterwards

    Now please reboot your machine

    NEXT**
Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop

    Additional Link

    * Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
    * Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
    * If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
    * Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
    * When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
    * Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
    * When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location.
    * You can also access the log by doing the following:

o Click on the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware icon to launch the program.
o Click on the Logs tab.
o Click on the log at the bottom of those listed to highlight it.
    o Click Open.

    Tutorial if needed
    http://thespykiller.co.uk/index.php/topic,5946.0.html

    Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

Let's make sure you have the most current version of HJT

Download Trend Micro Hijack Thisâ„¢ and save to desktop.
It is important that you uninstall any previous versions by using Add/Remove programs in your control panel before installing a newer version.
Doubleclick the HJTInstall.exe to start it.
By default it will install HijackThis in the Program Files\Trendmicro folder and create a desktop shortcut.

Accept the license agreement by clicking the "I Accept" button.
Click on the "Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
Click "Save log" to save the log file and then the log will open in Notepad.
Click on Edit-> Select All then click on "Edit -> Copy " to copy the entire contents of the log.

    In your next reply post:
    Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    New HJT log

You may need several replies to post the requested logs, otherwise they might get cut off.

    Welcome back

Thats fine MBAM took it out through the folder here plus a few other files that were not visible.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.
    • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7
    • Scroll to Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7 and click on the download button
      [IMG]

Click on the Accept License Agreement button Next Select your Platform and check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 7 License Agreement. ".
Download Now! Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language

Now close all windows, including your browser.
Double click on the Java installation that you downloaded and follow the prompts.

NEXT-remove all older versions of Java Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on the Software icon > add/remove programs.
Search in the list for all previous installed versions of Java. (J2SE Runtime Environment.... ) Select it and click Remove.
    • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
    • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each older Java versions.
    • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.

    NEXT**
I'd like for you to run this next online scan to check for remnants or anything that might be hidden.
The below scan can take up to an hour or longer, please be patient.

    *Note
It is recommended to disable onboard antivirus program and antispyware programs while performing scans so no conflicts and to speed up scan time.
Please don't go surfing while your resident protection is disabled!
Once scan is finished remember to re-enable resident antivirus protection along with whatever antispyware app you use.

Please do a scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner or from here
    http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.

Click on the Accept button and install any components it needs.
[*]The program will install and then begin downloading the latest definition
    files.
[*]After the files have been downloaded on the left side of the page in the Scan section select My Computer.
[*]This will start the program and scan your system.
[*]The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run. (At times it may appear to stall)
    * Once the update is complete, click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.
    * Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
    * Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.

[*]Once the scan is complete, click on View scan report To obtain the report:
    Click on: Save Report As
Next, in the Save as prompt, Save in area, select: Desktop
In the File name area, use KScan, or something similar In Save as type, click the drop arrow and select:
    Text file [*.txt]
    Then, click: Save
Please post the Kaspersky Online Scanner Report in
    your reply.

If at any time you have trouble with the "Accept" button of the license, click on the "Zoom" tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license has been accepted, reset to 100%
    .)
Or use Firefox with IE-Tab plugin

Thanks. I will post the log this evening. I'm having two issues with the laptop now. For one I cannot get XP service pack 2 0r 3 to install (gets halfway through loading and get access denied message). I've found a potential solution on the microsoft website.
The other problem I've encountered is my wireless connection doesn't work (not related to the stuff you had me doing). Appears it went south after I atttempted to load service pack 3. The device is working properly but when I go to refresh wireless connections I get a message telling me another application is running the wireless and only one can be running at a time. Doesn't make sense to me because I've never had an issue in the past

For right now hold off on Sp2 and Sp3 till we get all the malware removed.
Run the Kaspersky scan and post later when you can.

On the other errors I'll try to see what I can find.
Since this does take me out of my field, later I might have to ask that you go to one of the appropriate forums here at WindowsBBS for for help on those issues.

We can try this for a start

Next go Start, Run and type cmd and hit OK
    now type:
    ipconfig /flushdns
(note that a space between ipconfig and / is needed)
then hit Enter, type exit and hit Enter again.

    Microsoft reads as follows:
    http://support.microsoft.com/KB/871122

    1. Click Start, click Run, type ncpa.cpl and then click OK.
    2. Click Network Connections.
    3. In Network Connections, click to select your wireless connection, and then click Change settings of this connection.
    4. On the Wireless Networks tab, click to select the Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings check box.

    Then...

    1. Click Start, click Run, type %SystemRoot%\system32\services.msc /s, and then click OK.
    2. Double-click Wireless Zero Configuration.
    3. In the Startup type list, click Automatic, and then click Apply.
    4. In the Service status area, click Start, and then click OK.

You may need to reboot for the changes to take effect.

    Welcome back

The Kaspersky scan came back actually looking good.

Please disable TeaTimer for now, TeaTimer can be re-activated after you find and delete the following.

    Delete Smitfraud from your dessktop
    C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Desktop\SmitfraudFix <-delete this folder
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition\7.5\Quarantine <--delete the contents inside this folder

Did you try those instructions in my previous post for your wireless issue?

Please post back once more and let me know what issues remain.
