Alright this is the problem I'm having.

For the past few weeks I have been finding viruses in my registry and deleting them. One aptly named Vundo, which is a Trojan, as well as another one named trojan.pandex. I could not run internet explorer well nor firefox. None of the graphics would pop up on these browsers and many times it would replicate the page. I thought this was just due to the replicator viruses I was having, but what really caught my attention was when I deleted them from the registry, upon restart they just came back.

I have Norton 2008 and Adware that was trying to find the locations so I could delete them manually and I have done this for all the viruses and such that they have found. Still to no avail.

Now the system restore does not work at all. Did not keep logs of previous restore points so I decided to bite the bullet and simply do a system recovery. I did this and everything was moving along very well until after a required restart it would not allow me to boot into the desktop what so ever. It would load into Windows but would not pop up any trays or icons and will not even allow me to access the task manager. It -will- however boot in safe mode. Currently I am trying an additional system recovery to see if that fixes the problem, but I am still not sure what the problem is.

Hopefully one of you tech gurus can help me with this frustrating and clearly benign problem.

I'm not sure where you got the idea that this was clearly benign, but your current approach doesn't sound like its doing much beyond putting you into a deeper hole. This may help you out.

    ;)
