I have a concern. I will try to be brief.

On my old computer I had XP Home SP2 and was using Sygate Firewall along with the hardware firewall in my Vonage Device. All worked very well.

I now have a new computer with Vista Home Premium. Pete suggested Comodo which I downloaded and installed but when I ran the Leak Test Utility (from grc.com), the utility was able to penetrate the firewall. I unintalled Comodo and installed PCTools Firewall and got the same result.

The leak test was never able to penetrate Sygate.

Now, mind you, I have no problems on my old system nor my new one since using Spybot, Adaware, and AVG (now using Avast). But my daughter and her friends are on the computer quite a lot and I want to be sure we are fully protected.

My concern is the leak test. It was able to penetrate Comodo and PCTools. Maybe I didn't have Comodo configured right or something.

Am I being overly concerned? Are there some tweaks in Comodo I can to which will prevent leaks? I realize firewalls are only as good as the person with mouse in hand and teenagers are going to click on "allow" no matter what.

So, should I just stick with Comodo and not worry too much about this Leak Test Utility?

Btw, www.grc.com has a section called "shields up" which will test your firewall for incoming leaks.

    That wasn't brief was it...

    Thanks

    Mitch

I use COMODO and I just did the shieldsup and the leaktest. All were stealthed and the leak test could not connect to the website.

Did you tell the comodo window to block the leak test?

Yes I did, that is what concerned me. It is likely I didn't have something set correctly or there is some other problem on my end of the keyboard. will have to go back and retrace my steps and see what I get.

Thanks for confirming Comodo does what it is supposed to do - in the right hands:)

    need help configuring Comodo

Ok, running the leak test file it penetrates comodo. I deleted the file and downloaded it again. Ran it and it penetrated the firewall. How do I configure Comodo to block applications like this?

FYI to Mitch: I also use COMODO and I just ran both the Shieldsup and Leaktest and COMODO passed with honors.

When Leaktest.exe ran a window popped up asking if I wanted to allow leaktest.exe to access the internet. I clicked on the Blocked this Request button then OK and Leaktest could not gain access. In fact I ran it three times and it used three different ports and it was blocked all three times. The second and third times the COMODO window did not come up because when I clicked the Block this Request button I left the Remember this Answer box checked.

I also renamed the program and ran it again and I removed the check for the Remember... box then the COMODO window popup comes up every time.

Did you Allow it once and leave the Remember... box checked?

    Scout321X,

Thanks for the reply. Here is what is happening.

    DC on Leaktest.exe
I get a warning about "publisher could not be verified" from Vista.
    I click run
Leaktest opens and I click test for leaks
    Firewall penetrated.

I don't know where to in Comodo to tell it to block this application because Comodo warning never comes up.

I know it is something I am doing wrong, just can't figure out what it is.

Don't you have a list of "Allowed applications" i Comodo? If you find it, look up and delete the Leak Test-entry and try again. That might fix it.

    Mitch,

I am not familiar with Vista so the below instructions are using my XP Pro system.

Double click on the COMODO icon in the systray.
    Click on Firewall>Advanced>Network Security Policy

Find the entry for leaktest.exe and click on it.
Click on Remove and the entry should disappear.
Then click on Apply in the lower right.

A popup should show up the next time you run leaktest.exe. Assuming it does, click on Blocked this Request and uncheck the box for Remember this Answer then click on OK.

Leaktest should then show that the request was blocked: Unable to Connect.

I feel sure from your description that COMODO has "remembered" an earlier answer or has been taught not to ask. If the later then more research is needed to discover how to undo that.

You know COMODO comes with a pretty good help function. You should see the help icon (a white question mark in a blue circle) along side: "What do these settings do?" in the lower left part of the page.
