For me the biggest problem is with the very often forced install of a toolbar, which while offering some protection also comes with search engine changes and removal is not an easy thing.

There is an excellent review of the product here which also contains the removal steps for the toolbar, which are buried in the FAQ and require some command steps many won't want to try.

I've also seen many reports that it's a resource hog and caused many problems, enough for me to no longer recommend it any more. But that's more because of the greed issue than anything else.

AVG8 just hosed my system. Got rid of it & reinstalled 7.5.

Would urge others to wait a while before upgrading to 8.0

The procedure about advanced install add remove features was one that was in avg 7 as well
It worked fine with xp - what of vista ?
I received a well written online notice that support would be stopped for the product shortly
However will updates work for a while ?
What a shame - it was a good product
What if the antivirus scanning is not on all the time - is it still a resource hog ?
Any other recommendations on other products at this time ?

    re: AVG Free 8.0

I just upgraded to AVG Free 8.0 from AVG 7.01 as they kept saying i had to in order to get virus definition updates, etal.
I have rural dial up so it took nearly all day long from their website. It kept saying i had another anti-virus program and ought to uninstall it. I however had the same ones when i had AVG 7.

I just posted a thread asking if i have too much pc security as since the new upgrade of this AVG 8.0 upgrade, my pc is sluggish. Someone here mentioned they had the toolbar from them. I opted to not have that toolbar as i heard those toolbars are not good to have. I also had read many had complaints about the new AVG 8.0 upgrade, yet i felt there was nothing much i could do.

I used to have Avast and they did the same thing, so i had switched to AVG who i was told was even better and has been good. Maybe they just need to upgrade more on it and remove some bugs? I used to pay every year for the protection, yet now with only an SS check, i cannot afford it anymore.
Oh how i dislike all the changes esp. w/ security and upgrades and esp. when my pc is working fine.

In my other thread, i listed the Security programs i have, so hope to hear more from others about this question and my other. Happy Trails.

Personally (and I'm the exception to the rule around here), I think we make more of security than need be. You ask, "Have I too much?" I don't know but if your computer is running slowly, you have no virus and you are clean of spyware, then perhaps you do. I don't jump on the "I must have ALL the anti-spyware and anti-virus ware that is available for a simple reason: I don't believe it is necessary. If you use common sense and stay away from troublesome sites (i.e. gambling, ****)... if you refuse to open e-mail attachments and kill your java script.... if you refuse to click on hyper-links that come in your e-mail... if you run a good anti-spyware (i.e. CounterSpy) and a good anti-virus (CA, F-Secure, Avast, AVG 7 and a number of others that you can Google) AND lastly run a two-way firewall (i.e. Sunbelt's Kerrio firewall, Zone Alarm free, Comodo free) then you should be fine. No need for half a dozen anti-this and anti-that. Oh... many if not most will say... but each finds something different. True. And most find absolutely nothing other than a few harmless cookies. It's really up to you how paranoid you want to be about all this stuff.

crystalwoman, Perhaps you didn't de-select the "Enable Daily Scan" box that was offered during the install?

That might explain your sluggish system.

Well, I'm not too sure I like the "upgrade ". The previous version would scan my computer in about an hour and 45 minutes (PII 400mhz, 512MB RAM, 26GB Hard Drive space). My scan yesterday still wasn't finished after four hours. I'll give it another shot after I get my new computer.

I uninstalled AVG 8.0 and installed Avast 4.8 and i am happy again. PC is not sluggish and the dl did not take near as long as AVG 8.0 had which made my PC sluggish. Back in business until next upgrade of a program on my PC. Thanks for posts. :)

Hi visonof, I have 3 Home Built Computers operating currently with XP Home SP3 and AVG 8.0 Free. No problems and all computers seem to be a little quicker than previous. My 4th Comp is XP Home SP3 with Avast 4.8.1169. and this is AOK. Can't say I've experienced any problems with AVG 8.0 and it looks a better program and operates smoothly and does a scan without slowing things down much at all. It's easy to set up and you can set your scan for a time to suit within one week. Initially it's set to do a Daily scan, but you can reset the Schedule once it's activated. Nothing bad to report so far. Neil.:D

I am currently testing AVG 8.0 on a test XP Pro SP3 computer. I have not installed any email scanning, nor the Link Scanning, nor the Tool Bar.

I do find that the update process takes 100% of the cycles. I also find that when I use explorer to open a folder which contains a lot of installation files, the computer grinds to a halt the first time I open the folder.

Both these problems have been reported to the AVG forum by other users.

Bottom line, AVG 8.0 is not as bad as some have reported, but it is still becoming bloatware. I will replace AVG this week-end with Avast (newly released version) to do a comparison.

BTW my test computer was formatted and XP re-installed so I can test AVG.

I have been running AVG 7.5 Pro (paid) version for a little over a year. I was invited to upgrade to the paid version of AVG 8 build 93 for free. I ran it for about a week until I received the following error:
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Application popup: avgtray.exe - Application Error : The exception Illeagal Instruction

An attempt was made to execute an illeagal instruction. (0xc000001d) occured in the application at location 0x00b10159.
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
At that point I unistalled it and reinstalled my AVG 7.5 Pro. I liked a lot of the new stuff in 8.0 but others (like the toolbar) I didn't like. It is becoming bloatware compared to 7.5. There is a way to install it without the toolbar but I didn't discover it until it was already installed. I would be willing to visit it again but nearer the end of my current two year licensee.

I would advise all to spend time reading the 8.0 FAQ's before installing. That is where the info is for installing without the toolbar.
