    My BOAC (Box Of Assembled Components) was built in June 2001: Epox 8KTA3 + Inno3D GeForce2 MX + Athlon Thunderbird 1GHz/266MHz + 512MB Samsung PC133 + 2 x 120GB Hitachi 7K250 ( "only" 3-4 years old) + Samsung CD-R/RW + Samsung DVD-ROM + Samsung SyncMaster 753DF + HP ScanJet 4300C + HP DeskJet 930C + a pair of loudspeakers.

It runs pretty well with XP and everything else tweaked for performance and all the "bling" turned off. I don't notice any appreciable difference when comparing other systems with a single-core processor up to 2 GHz but now, it's time to build a new one. I always seem to find an excuse not to, such as "wait for XP SP3 to get a cleaner installation of the OS ", "wait for the price of an Intel E6850 to drop a bit" and so on but one of these days ... ... !

All of the PCs in my house (4 of them) are home-built and are upgraded bit by bit over time. For me to give you an answer, I'd have to know which part you were referring to. :D The only part that has some decent longevity are the cases and to some extent the power supply.

I have somewhere between 12 and 16 computers. They don't call me Mr Pac Rat for nothing......Then there's the part where everyone says: "Give it to Steve, he'll take it."

Best story - after a few months of telling a friend I'd be glad to take their old parts they call up and say come tonight or its all going in the trash.

I was shoocked.. HP Multi Media pc with XP Media, 3.2HT cpu, 250 gig drive, 2 dvd drives....A 2.4 gig machine and a older P3.....

I did the same for a few years. I finally ran out of room for all the PCs and called an outfit that goes through the old PCs then donates them.

I have two PCs at work (one main one and one I use to develop new code). I've had three PCs at home but over the last couple of years I've been rationalizing, and when the motherboard died on my PC recently, I replaced it with an HP dx2250. Very cheap and works a treat. I fitted extra RAM taking it to two gigs - and it does everything I want it to do. So I am down to one PC at home. All my desktops run XP Pro.

I've embraced Virtual PC and VMWare, and am finding they sate my needs to have multiple set ups. Virtual PC is very easy to use and the ease of copying images makes it great for test environments. VMWare server is almost as easy to use, and has the benefit of supporting Linux. Both work happily on my new PC (especially if I change the VMWare services to manual) so I pick and choose the utility to suit the current test. So, I'll probably do the same at work when my works systems need replacing.

Oh! and I also have a cheap Dell laptop running Ubuntu. That works very well and even my wife gets along with it.

bought a seven year old home built pc for $25 in Dec 2006. Amptron 3726 MB with 384MB PC133 RAM (had 128MB PC100 when I bought it), one 6gig HD and one 20gig HD (my add on - which I got free from a co-worker) both Western Digital, Phillips DVD ROM/CDR, and Creative Labs CD ROM. 19" AOC 9GLrs Monitor (IT Dept at work was going to throw it in the dumpster).

All this replaced my 13 year old 486DX33 (finally died and had to trash) and my 12 year old 17" CTX Monitor - which I still have.
