My Sister is running a Dell desktop with Windows XP and SP2. She has IE 7 running as her browser, but the pages do not render correctly. It would be like looking at this page but not seeing the colors at the top or around the sides, just the text part and some pictures show correctly. And I also noticed that on some pages she has a little box with a red X in it instead of a picture. I do know what that means, but for the time being I can't remember. LOL

If anyone has any idea of what could be causing these problems, and how to correct it, I would greatly appreciate the help.

    Thank you,:)

Does this occur on all IE pages or just on specific sites?

Is this a recent occurrence or has it always been that way?

Is there an entry for Windows Internet Explorer 7 in Add/Remove programs?

    Hello Pete,

And thank you for taking an interest.

It happens on all IE 7 pages, not just a few. I have a feeling it has always been this way. The computer is a Dell model, and my Sister bought it earlier this year. It didn't come with Vista, so it was before Vista was released or on all the models.

About it being listed in Add/Remove programs, I didn't find it in there, but I did find it listed in her C:\Windows\ Program Files, and put a short cut on her desktop for it. I'm thinking she probably needs to download the latest IE 7, then remove the one she has somehow or re-install the download over top what she has. But I await what you have to say. I am far from the expert.

    Thank you so much,
    Sandie

Before thinking of a repair/reload of IE 7 check that it is not an Add-on that is causing the problem ....

In IE > Tools > Manage Add-ons > Enable or Disable Add-ons disable all the Add-ons. If this resolves the problem re-enable each add-on until the culprit is found.

    Hello Pete,

She has no add-ons running with her IE 7, so that can't be what is causing her problem. I admit, I had not thought of that, so it was a good suggestion to try that first. So do you think she should just download IE 7 again, remove the old one, and then re-install the new download?

    Thank you,
    Sandie

I agree that the best way forward is to re-install IE 7 - however I am a little surprised that there is no entry for it in Add/Remove Programs although this may be explained by the fact that the computer was delivered with IE 7 already installed. Uninstalling IE 7 reverts the system back to IE 6 under normal circumstances.

Before atempting to uninstall download a new copy from here .....

    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/ie/default.mspx

To uninstall IE 7 follow the instructions given here ....

    Thank you so much Pete,

I will pass your advice and links on to my Sister ASAP, and instruct her to let me know if this fixes her problem, which I believe it will. I really appreciate your help in this matter. Again, thanks so much.

    Take care :)

    Hi Pete

The news is not good. My sister followed your instruction (kept me on the phone to make sure she was doing it right. LOL) But when the newly installed IE 7 was up and running, the pages still were not rendering correctly. I was befuddled, but thought "I wonder if the problem is with some computer setting, and not the browser?"

I had her go and download Firefox, and install that. Once that was installed, I sent her to my blogs, and once again, the pages are not loaded entirely as everyone else sees them. I know for a fact that the banner on the top of the page is not showing right. It is green, and my Sister says on her PC it's white.

The problem must be with some setting or other on her computer, but I am at a loss as to what that could be. Do you have any suggestions???? I sure do hope so.

Again, thanks for any help or suggestions.

Don't know if this will entirely help but that little box with a red x in it usually caused by pop-up blocker and/or ad blocker.

Turn off pop up blocker in IE7.
Do same for any anti-virus if applicable. Norton also may (depending on version) have ad-blocker, if it does turn that off too and retry.

Sandie - that is disappointing :( As the problem exists also in Firefox it is unlikely to be browser related - or a question of security settings IMHO. In the past I have found it necessary to put specific web sites into the Trusted Zone in IE for them to display correctly - you might get her to try that with a website - can remove from the Trusted Zone later and see if there is any effect.

Would be worth trying a reset of IE settings - Tools > Internet Options > Advanced > Reset.

Does your sister see the rest of Windows normally? The only other thought I have is video drivers.

Was replying to part about boxes with red x in them since so familiar (original post).
Especially if have Norton Internet Security 2007 with Add On Internet Pack although it’s happened with earlier versions.

Symptom sometimes is boxes with red x in them as it blocks pics from loading.
It’ll also prevent streaming video from some sources. Symptom there is just a gray screen. See this thread: http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=64973

It’s only the pop-up blocker, ad blocker part that’s doing it. They can be independently turned off, neither one is really a security setting but rather an added "˜feature’.

Don’t know if other AV, Internet Security programs may have same problem. But check seems quick simple easy n worth a try.

Guess it could be the ever intrusive Norton - I dumped that many moons ago before it became as intrusive and as bloated as it now is :) Hence no experience of current and recent versions.

    Sandie

Does your sister use Norton? Would be helpful to post detail of her AV, Firewall and antimalware/spyware software.

No, she is using Avast antivirus software, and she has Ad-Aware and Spybot S & R, because I recommended them to her, and she actually paid attention.

She uses Windows Firewall, and when I visited last weekend, I took her to Windows Live Safety Center for the free scan and repair.

I honestly believe this problem is related to some setting or more on the computer it's self. I just can't think what it could be. I checked her color settings and the Advanced settings for IE 7 to make sure she had those all set up right, and they were fine. I am at a total loss.

She knows there are things missing when she is on certain websites because she can move her mouse around, and suddenly a little hand appears, meaning there is a button or something there she is not seeing. She told me a couple times she clicked when the hand showed and it took her to another web page so she knows something should be showing up, but it's not.

I hope we can solve this mystery somehow. It's bugging me, I think, even more than it is bugging her. LOL

Keep the suggestions coming. Eventually we will hit on the right move.

    Thanks guys
    Sandie

We need to eliminate a few possible causes here ....

Turn off Windows Firewall - open IE - any change? Turn on Windows firewall.

Turn off Avast - open IE - any change? Turn on Avast

Turn off TeaTimer in Spybot if it is running - open IE - any change?

Run an online AV scan through Quicklinks in my signature

    Post a HijackThis log .....

    Hi Pete,

I will copy/paste your message and send it to my Sister. I can't promise you she will fully understand the directions. She is not quite as computer literate as I am. For her it sends e-mails to her hubby in Iraq, and a toy to play games on. But I will give this a try.

The last time I sent her your instructions, she called me on the phone, and held me there as she did everything you suggested, so that if she goofed, she could ask me what to do right away. LOL

Thank you so much. I will send this to her right away, and I promise to get back to you with the results. OK?

    Take care, :)

I see no obvious problems in the HJT log - have you tried any other of my suggestions?

    Hi PeteC,

As far as I know, my Sister has followed all of your instructions so far. I have copy/pasted and e-mailed them all to her, and even helped her complete some of them. The HiJackThis log file was the last thing on the list to be done, and she did that. I guess we have you stumped as well???

I really believe it has something to do with her computer settings of some kind. Display or whatever. I did check them myself, and couldn't find the problem, but there could have been places to check that I don't know of. I know that with my own computer there can be several doors to enter before fixing some problems, or several ways to get to the same problem. Very confusing sometimes.

Thank you for all your help though. I really do appreciate the effort made.

    Cordially,
    Sandie :)
