I saw a note on tomcoyote.org which said Hijackthis.exe was sold to Trend Micro and it now contains "spyware ". Could this be so........?

    Can anyone elaborate?

I just ran the newest HjT from Trend & there's no spyware afaict. Sounds like a very uninformed over zealous person at TomCoyote:

    http://www.tomcoyote.org/hijackthis-is-now-spyware/200/

My gosh! The HjT button says "AnalyzeThis" and beneath the button it says "Upload to Trend Secure ". How could you not know that something was being uploaded? Also, to download or upload ANYTHING, one's ip address is logged on a server, it HAS to be logged/cached at least temporarily else the download/upload will fail.

As for the "personal data" that "may" get uploaded, it is NOT really personal. The log file contains names of your homepage, some of the software you may use, your operating system, and some other info re your computer. It cannot and does not contain your email address, your name, street address or any other personal info. The uploading will contain your ip address, but there is no way to determine IF Trend stores it and what they do with it. About ALL they could do with the ip address anyway is store it and find out where you are geographically. They cannot determine exactly who you are with an ip address unless they have access to your isp restricted confidential records of customer ip assignment.

The above article is just more useless hype from a site that is attempting to generate more Web traffic and controversy.

Agreed and I'll add that it was a poor attempt to get regular folks to notice the problem with the button, which virtually all involved with the beta testing and 'back room' in the sec comm assistance to TM have been trying fruitlessly to have removed.

    Excellent tutorial located here:
    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial42.html

Just don't go off trying to fix logs after reading it, it's much more complicated than that. :p

Anyone can go and start saying delete this an that but that does not mean they actually know what they are doing. Malware has advanced so much and become so complicated with multiple levels of removal in some instances it really has become a chess match.

    Thanks for the link.

I would never venture to try to manipulate things myself - my knowledge in this area is microscopic.

I just want to learn more so I will understand better.
